Ok, nice entertaining, look what the last mechanic did time.


Kind of hard to tell but they definitely didn't use an FM install tool, the thing is sunk about a quarter inch deep. How the hell did they do that, a hunk of pipe or something?

 

Managed to get the seal out with a sheet metal screw.
While I was cleaning everything up I was remembering something about starters and transmissions somewhere in Aidandj's thread.
Originally I thought, meh, 1.6 stuff. Now I realize I should have paid more attention, I don't think my NB starter will fit the 1.6 tranny.

I think I will just put the old 5 speed back and keep an eye out for a starter. That way I can document it's glorious high rpm launch control demise here for all to see.

 

Starter should work fine.

 

I will have another look, pretty sure one of the bolts don't line up.

 

Just curious, why did you go with the FM Clutch instead of the 949 clutch?

On a second note, why didn't you buy my brand new one when I was selling it last week! We are 20 minutes apart!

 

I don't remember exactly why but I think my timing was off and to quote you "people are lining up for this clutch kit". Which was what I read when I saw your ad.
Also I already have a light flywheel and didn't want to spend the extra cash for another one.

I think the FM clutch has an outstanding reputation and as I said before. I see more glowing reviews and have only read about 2 or 3 defective units at most. Not to mention more holding power and MT pink

 

Happy to meet up though, I remember seeing your ad and thinking damn. It obviously sold quickly.

 

The fm clutch is $10 more then 949racing but holds something like 60ft/lbs more torque then the 949 one.

 

This is the issue I am running into with the starter. Are you suggesting that I only run 2 bolts?
I must admit I can think of a dozen different cars that only use 2 bolts. They are on opposite sides of the starter so it's not like only a corner would be holding on. I could slot the bell housing and backing plate but that seems a bit extreme.
This is a 99 starter on an early NA backing plate with a vvt backing plate beside.


Still deciding, feel free to weigh in with an opinion.

 

Run 2 bolts, don't worry about it. It is standard practice when switching to a 6 speed.

Ahhh. That's right. Bummer, I would have much rather done a local sale, but alas a buyer came in and I had to honor it. Where are you located? Do much Wild Cat Canyon, Grizzly Peak? Skyline?

I am in Marin, but I usually make it to Wednesday night drags at Sears Point when my car is not apart.
That is where I plan to grenade these 2 5 speeds so I can upgrade like Vlad said.

 

Will you hurry up and get launch control dialed in, then some slicks on the back wheels so you can make it into the 12's. Then I can say I officially sell the cheapest 12 second turbo setup on the market.

 

I was just thinking about posting that I better get off here and get to work.

 

Also I am doing a rods only build for my 99 right now. When I am done with it I will paste up costs and everything. I am expecting to be about $600-750 if you include the cost of rods. I am reusing rods, so I am hoping to be a little under $500 including machine work.

 

Getting some seals installed, this is a great tool, thanks for the tip, by the way. Made it absolutely painless, I am pretty experienced at installing seals and bearings but there is always a risk of messing one up.


It's interesting to note that the 1.6 tranny has a steel front cover and the 99 has an aluminum one. Maybe I should swap it? On the other hand maybe the steel one is stronger.
