Real men dont use gaskets. Just go raw

Bareback baby. It's been suggested to run gasketless if flanges are truly flat. Fewer failures when gaskets deteriorate. I followed that convention since I was a noob here and it seemed to work each time so far.

Though I'm reminded from my subie days, the MLS gaskets for the up pipe would squeal like a banshee if flange surfaces would warp. Like a Reed whistle.

Wired in two 6-50r outlets.

I'm tired as shit for paying so much money on small jobs like replacing a flex pipe or welding a bung. Time to pick up filler rod, tungsten and start practicing.

Tomorrow, if the weather holds out, I'll try to check compression on the miata and Datsun, and rip the Datsun head off. Then test some wheel fitment on Kmo25's car

Weather held - post compression update!

Didn't get to miata. For Datsun :

I need to craft a timing chain wedge since those don't exist anymore before we can continue further.

Pulled the intake manifold off, and unbolted the exhaust manifold. This head doesn't have the oiling rail like I thought it would.

Leakdown numbers were:
Cyl 1 - 6%
Cyl 2 - 6%
Cyl 3 - 4%
Cyl 4 - 7%
Cyl 5 - 20%
Cyl 6 - bubbling out the coolant hose.

I'm thinking cylinder 5 and 6 are related, maybe losing compression through the gasket. Hopefully pull this off and learn more.

Tested leakdown past my rings today (no head).

Thats good news.

400whp on a 6 speed?

People seem to say that after 330lbft (which i assume is less than you have given hp) 4th goes.
Do you just keep swapping them out or do you have a methodology for survival?
I have no intention of hitting these numbers currently unless i win the lottery but you seem to be safe in a world of dying boxes.

psyber_0ptix 03-20-2019 07:49 AM

Last time it dyno'd successfully, it put down 402whp/375 torque. It had a boost leak. I fixed the boost leak and 18psi/Vladitune had reworked the map, it made enough to slip the "unslippable" FM2 clutch on the dyno. After replacing that, and retuning it, it makes enough HP that wheels spin from the torque in third gear. So I'm not sure what it made before putting it down for maintenance. This was all while I had 38% leakdown on one of the cylinders.

Honestly it's been mostly mechanical empathy. Not clutch dumping and I have no reason to launch from a dig. Everything else has been a failure point, clutches, axles snapping etc. Now that those are fixed and replaced, I'm putting the stress right back onto the gears. It's inevitable and I can feel it in my bones, that a broken trans is just around the corner.

I have a BMW 6 speed on standby, but honestly can't bring myself to spend more on this car. If something like a trans failure happens, I'll probably just start parting things out to downgrade and pay for a kswap kit. Or any other reason to start fresh on an NB1 shell.

rrjwilson 03-20-2019 08:17 AM

Even in my wildest dreams I do not wish to top 348whp which should be under the 330lbft 4th gear death limit so I just wondered.
I'd love to say I'd have the empathy but unable to pull out of a junction, i'm going to forget and launch it like i was at the strip.

My plan includes four power level currently.
232bhp - I've been told this is easy to breach and safe on a 1.6
232whp - I've been told this is on the safe limit for a 1.6
348bhp - When the 1.6 goes this will be my first 1.8 goal
348whp - This is my balls out dream but I do not wanted to be changing parts every few weeks so it may be a pipe dream.

psyber_0ptix 03-20-2019 08:54 AM

Empathy isn't a full time requirement, but more helps. I've definitely done a couple hard launches for fun, but I'm at a point where carelessness becomes dangerous. Full tilt, will that bump put me in a wall? Am I willing to go to jail for this speed? Honestly, it just takes some common sense and having enough to lose to keep you in check. Keep in mind my build is from the age when EFR's were few, and transmission upgrades were near non-existent. ::shaking cane:: Back in my day there weren't any easy button options like KMiata and Trackspeed kits. What a time to be alive; they've paved a path of reliability for future generations.

People say this and that, a lot of it can be conjecture if they don't have first hand experience. Echo chamber of old "common knowldge." Like why people are still buying Begi/Bell/Max-G products is beyond anyone on this forum. I chose if it ain't broke don't fix it. The trans is the last thing I've had to touch in my car (since first swapping it in) aside from my stock dash and carpet. That being said, this thread is only my experience.

You can plan your perfect build all you want, but the best car is the one that runs, not that sits in a garage for years waiting to be completed. You're wasting money having power goals in stages in my opinion. Don't bother with a 1.6L, that preceded the first post of my build thread. The same amount of money you'd be spending on modifying and building up a 1.6L, simply because you already have it, is lost in all comparable power gains if you just invested an extra $400 on a bare block, crank, and head...even if it's a lowly BP05. Build to be overengineered, and don't replace parts. I'd argue build it for 400hp, but run it at 250hp. There's nothing wrong with a factor of safety. When you feel ready for more, add boost, add ethanol, add injector duty cycle....there free upgrade. Spend once.

You've been told a lot of things by a lot of people, but the above is told by someone who:
- Had a 1.6L
- Built a BP4w
- Built a BP6D
- Had two different Borg Warner EFR Turbo's and three different housings (from t25 not t4 twin scroll)
- Has had three built heads
- Replaced a clutch two times because it's been overpowered
- Had three intercooler setups
- Had three radiator setups
- Had three suspension setups
- Had two brake setups
- Had two different set of ID injectors (ID1000/1300)
- Had two different fuel pumps
- Had three different fuel rails
...and so much more.

Set your end goal, stick with it, don't cheap out where it counts or you will pay for it much more down the line. Take your girlfriend/boyfriend/spouse out with what you've saved because they are being real patient with your hobby.
There are a ton more people on this forum who've been here a hell of a lot longer than me and have earned their Sage status because they've been through every stage of this tenfold. I'd say read up on what some of those guru's have done and take that over any clubroadster, fb, low post count chatter. Research is your friend here, and you're already off to a good start, just be wise about your build approach.

DNMakinson 03-20-2019 09:12 AM

:likecat: Set final goals before starting. Some things you can only guess... will I track the car, for instance. But, one should contemplate such things and give it your best shot.

dleavitt 03-20-2019 10:19 AM

I will echo: buy once, cry once. Outside of the parts costs, think of how much labor you are duplicating by going in stages? I don't know you, but I know that for me my free time is very valuable and has multiple competing demands placed upon it. Ultimately, working in the garage took a back seat to work, family, and other obligations so now I'm paying someone else to turn the wrenches and get my project back on the road. Had I got stuck at the equivalent of your Stage 2, Stages 3 and 4 would have been a pipe dream. Instead I'm able to get to my goals nearly within my adjusted budget because I planned ahead and got the stuff I needed to support my goals two years ago.

concealer404 03-20-2019 10:32 AM

I approve of K swap NB1. Do that.

matrussell122 03-20-2019 10:35 AM

Could even add his fancy 6758 Twin scroll to the K swap for added pucker factor

psyber_0ptix 03-20-2019 10:42 AM

Buy once, cry once.....man, I wish I knew that one before I started all this

I wish I started on an NB

This is why it's hard for me to put this car back together right now lol.

rrjwilson 03-20-2019 10:45 AM

Don't worry I'm not planning on buying more than once for almost anything.
Manifold and turbo are the only bought twice, things.
