People that believe we need to forego fossil fuels to reduce CO2 emissions cut down 16 million trees (which we all know remove CO2 from the air).
Now we're going to build a machine that eats CO2, and probably cut down a bunch more trees to make a place for it.

A generation from now, how are we going to look back at our current "Green Energy?"
I'm thinking it will be a giant face palm.

Man forced to ditch his $115k Ford electric truck during family road trip

Dalbir Bala was en-route from his home in Manitoba, Canada to Chicago in his six-month old 2023 Ford F-150 Lightning Lariat with an extended-range battery, which he purchased in January for $115,000 (around £90600) excluding tax.

While he was travelling for business, his wife and three kids joined him for the ride, leaving home with a fully-charged battery and three planned stops to top it up.

With their first stop going smoothly, their problems began in Albertville, Minnesota where he says he received a 'faulty connection' error message from the fast charger.

The family continued on to Elk River around 15 minutes away - and the charger there wouldn't work either.

He and his family were then forced to bail on the vehicle in Minnesota on 27 July.

"It was really a nightmare frustration for us," Bala told CBC News.

The EV owner has been outspoken about his frustration. Credit: Facebook/Dalbir Bala

He said: "By now it was late afternoon. We were really stuck, hungry, and heartbroken."

With only 15 kilometres of juice left, the truck was towed to a local Ford dealership and the family rented a Toyota 4Runner to reach Chicago.

Source? I'd be very interested in using this in conversation.

Starting with the first claim that it takes a million pounds of ore to create 25 lbs of actual lithium it seemed extremely exaggerated. A quick Google says "The naturally occurring form contains 8% pure lithium oxide (Li2O), but commercial ores usually contain only 1–3%." so we will use the 1% number. We will also assume it needs 25lbs of 100% pure Li, not just some alloy or impure version of it. Using atomic weights, the Li2O molecule is 46.5% Lithium by weight. Using these numbers, 25 lbs of pure lithium could be extracted from 5,376 lbs of ore (and that's assuming terrible ore quality). So that gives this boomer-*** meme an accuracy of 0.5%, or an error of 99.5%. Even if we were to say the extraction can only get 1% of the Lithium from the ore that's still 537,600 lbs (269 tons) of ore. Needless to say, this meme likely has no source.

I get that most car guys don't like the government forcing them down your throats, but c'mon 500 tons? That's absurd, and regardless of the unpaid child labor that is likely employed, it is prohibitively expensive. I thought this forum was dedicated to spreading truth and scientific information

Maybe it takes the removal and processing of 500tons of earth to get the 5376lbs of the naturally occurring 8% ore that is required to make 25lbs of pure Li.

You can spend a week online looking up the shortage of materials, how much fuel and land it takes to mine this stuff, how extremely difficult it is to recycle, etc.

That's more reasonable, I'm just pointing out that this meme is likely inaccurate or misleading in one way or another.

Oh I know, I'm not taking a position with the politics and stuff, I'm just stating this meme is likely factually inaccurate. Any time I see numbers being thrown at you without at least a mention of a source, I'm skeptical. Also, I recognize it isn't anywhere near as "green" as some suggest.

While I'm not against or in favor of electric cars in regard to emissions or ethics, as the years go by and oil becomes more scarce and prices rise, electric cars may make more sense. Oil is not renewable, there's only so much on this planet we call home. What will we do once anything oil-based becomes too expensive for the average person to afford? Whether it is in 50 years as some sources suggest, 100 years, or 250 years it is going to happen eventually. If alternative or nuclear energy is cheap and abundant in the future (I'm quite the optimist here), it'll only make sense to use electric transportation. At the end of the day, we don't know what the future holds for us, but what I do know is I should have 60+ years left in my life and change is going to come one way or another and we can't possibly predict in what direction things will go. You can't look at how technology has changed in the last few generations' lives and tell me it won't continue in the future (combustion engines or electric vehicles). To outright hate a technology since it could replace the internal combustion engine that we all love is ignorant. It could just be the saving grace of personal transportation.

Also, I was joking about me being banned for not immediately shitting on EVs lol. Not you. All in good heart

Very few people who you'll encounter in this particular thread hate EVs because they may replace internal combustion engines as the norm.

They hate them because EV adoption has become politicized, with politicians and activists at the left end of the spectrum advocating that internal combustion engine ownership is just one of the many personal liberties which we must all agree to sacrifice in order to appease the Scary Climate Monster.

So Trump's new charges leaked online prior to them meeting about deciding what to charge him with? Weird...
