I know this will never happen because of today's climate, but I really wish there was some sort of test of competency to be allowed the privilege to vote. Braineack, of course, correctly identified the fact that Manafort was a diversion planted by the Russians in order to divert attention away from the Trump / GOP's ongoing efforts to till the soil with the seeds of fear and doubt which will eventually blossom into evidence sufficient for SCOTUS to rule against pretty much the whole Bill of Rights in a series of amazingly relevant-seeming cases, because if they don't, then scary people with skin darker than Pantone 7506 who don't like AR-15s will force us all to abort the fetuses that we conceived with our same-sex partners while eating court-ordered cake.







It's become commonplace to say things like "I'd give my right arm for..."

And the reality of the situation is that if you've ever had major reconstructive surgery on your right arm, and then spent three months unable to use it and dealing with external fixation, you probably would not, in fact, give your right arm for most things. (Southpaws, translate accordingly.)

And yet I can honestly say that I would genuinely give one of any body part which is functinoally redundant and of which I have two or more, aside from a lung (long story) or my right arm (see above), in order to realize that goal.

 

You lost me at first, then nicely summarized your point. I'll give a left nut, I think that's functionally redundant for a 37-year old man-child who has no desire for offspring.

We have a competency test to drive, have a concealed carry license, the ability to serve food, etc ( and yes I realize what a sham these tests are) , yet one of the most important instruments for change..............you can be a slack-jawed reeeeeeeeee and you can still tell me I don't pay enough in taxes.

 

It's in the best interests of whatever political party happens to be in power at any given time to enfranchise as many as possible of the dumb, the illiterate, the uninformed, the ill-informed, and those otherwise generally unfit to participate in the mechanics of a representative democracy.

Going back at least 100 years, we have evidence of single-issue candidates physically driving single-issue voters (who know nothing other than "this candidate will give me free stuff") to the polling stations.

And that's a bad thing.

From 2003-2005, I flew from PHL to LAX (and back) a great many times with one of those long break-off type box cutters in my carry-on laptop bag. It was years later when cleaning out the bag that I noticed it.

Since you're white, you should have just put it in your carry on.

 

 

I think back to the pre-9/11 days, when I was travelling often for work. For short trips (eg: where I was expected to be on-site within an hour or two of landing) I'd bring my toolbox as carry-on luggage rather than checking it.

Knives, screwdrivers, butane torch, irons, small wrench sets... Basically enough to dismantle the plane from the inside while in flight.

Also, sometimes more advanced tools. Try to imagine explaining to the security officer (in the pre-TSA era) what a four-channel digital oscilloscope is. And this was back when such devices were large and required AC power.

Of course, in the post-9/11 era, I traded that luxury for the prestige of being not-quite-brown-enough to be automatically suspect anymore.
