C-SPAN has suspended its political editor Steve Scully indefinitely after he admitted to lying about his Twitter account being hacked.
Scully was supposed to moderate the second debate between President Trump and Joe Biden tonight, but the debate was canceled by the Debate Commission after the President was diagnosed with COVID and refused to switch to a virtual format. The president was cleared by doctors nearly a week ago to resume public functions, but the debate remained canceled.
Last week, after President Trump criticized Scully as a “never Trumper,” Scully tried to send a private message to one of the biggest never-Trumpers, one-time White House aide Anthony Scaramucci. However, the message, “@Scaramucci should I respond to Trump?” was accidentally tweeted publicly. People immediately seized upon it as proof Scully was coordinating with anti-Trump people.
Upon realizing that he’d been caught, Scully claimed the message wasn’t actually from him, and that his Twitter account had been “hacked”.
Today, however, C-SPAN says Scully confessed to lying about the hack, and the network has suspended him indefinitely. “He understands that he made a serious mistake,” the network said. “We were very saddened by this news and do not condone his actions.”
Scully has led the network’s presidential election coverage since 1992.
