Update at 7:36 a.m. ET: The four U.S. attorneys in California, the first state to pass a law legalizing marijuana use for patients with doctors' recommendations, have scheduled a joint news conference today to "outline actions targeting the sale, distribution and cultivation of marijuana."

Their offices refused to provide details in advance of what moves the officials are taking or how many of the state's hundreds of storefront pot shops would be affected, the Associated Press reports.

Initial stories indicated that all medical-marijuana dispensaries in California had been ordered to shut down, but the actual target remains unclear.

At least 16 pot shops or their landlords received letters this week warning they would face criminal charges and confiscation of their property if the dispensaries do not shut down in 45 days, the AP reports.

The news agency obtained copies of the letters that a prosecutor sent to at least 12 San Diego dispensaries. They state that federal law "takes precedence over state law and applies regardless of the particular uses for which a dispensary is selling and distributing marijuana."

The Los Angeles Times says that one letter to the Marin Alliance notes that the dispensary is within a prohibited distance of a park, raising the possibility that enforcement will zero in on stores near schools and playgrounds.

The newspaper, quoting an unidentified source, says the U.S. prosecutor in Los Angeles would not initially focus on dispensaries in that city. The Times also quotes Dale Gieringer, the director of California NORML, which backs legalizing marijuana, as saying the crackdown apparently will be tailored to fit the regional differences in the state.

"They want to do a clean sweep in San Diego, whereas in Northern California they can't possibly do a clean sweep," he tells the newspaper. "There's no political support for it. It would be devastating."

AP says the federal prosecutors have notified at least 16 pot shops or their landlords.

Thats bullshit. Pot is the least likely substance to put someone over the edge into a shooting rage. Unless we're talking about chipmunks and pellet rifles. lol

 

it's not about sense, it's about control.

 

I will cross the fingers of my right hand, hoping that this is the kind of push needed to make common sense change to the Federal laws allowing states and their residents to make decisions on the legality of recreational drug use.

With my left hand, I will be applying a face palm and muttering in frustration about how people still fail to make the connection between prohibition of drug use and prohibition of alcohol.

Full disclosure: I enjoy alcohol (bourbons and rums, mostly) but do not smoke, snort or shoot up anything. I do believe that marijuana, in particular, should be treated no differently than alcohol based on a societal cost/benefit analysis.

 

The Constitution does not authorize the Federal Gov't to write drug laws.
The Constitution does not allow unconstitutional "Federal laws" to trump State law.

This is why the Federal Gov't was originally designed to be more controlled and funded by the States and not directly by the people. Why should voters in North Carolina impose their will on Californians on matters that don't affect them?

When the Federal Gov't collapses fiscally, there will be no more funding for BS departments that enforce BS laws.

 

Care to elaborate on why exactly, as in for what purpose the gov wants to control this aspect of our lives? In addition, who do you think in the gov wants to control us?

 

 

Ever wonder if these sick, twisted pot-dispensaries are thinking, "mMan, how can I get more children to buy my product with certified prescription? I know, put it next to a playground!!!"

 

Control is power, and powerful men are wealthy and make history. You should ask these same questions to Jeremiah Wright and Farrakhan.
