asking the wrong people
Congressional approval rates are some of the lowest on record, and we've just come out of one of the most contentious presidential races in history. Some eight million fewer people didn't even bother to vote this election, probably from the rancor and perceived lack of good choices.
But what I'm hearing now from people is that "there ought to be a law," or "the government needs to do something about it." Well they're batting about .001 right now...what makes you think they're suddenly going to make things better?

I read an interesting article - I'll try to find and link later - written from the perspective of a mother with a 13-year old child with behavioral issues (he's received all sorts of diagnoses) that has threatened to kill her and himself. She made a point (which I have not researched) that the main providers of mental health in this country are jails and prisons.
It does seem like the mental health of these young men needs to be addressed as much as their access to firearms.

Mark - You might have looked in to this; I haven't made the time. Someone whose opinions I don't normally value mentioned there may have been a common type of medication used between a number of the more recent shooters. Any input on that? I would think that's BS as those medications would not be released to the public.

I didn't say it was easy. There are social and mental health issues (children and adults) but that doesn't depend on school shootings to be true. Likewise, it's not a gun control issue; it's already against the law for kids to bring guns of any kind into schools. It's a security issue; do a better job keeping weapons of all kinds out of schools. Not easy, but simple to understand. No need to confuse things.

tl;dr -- In cases of mass shootings or violence in which medical history has become public, there is a strong correlation to psychotropic black-box warning pharmaceuticals. In cases in which a full medical history is not know, there is still a strong correlation to psychiatric care which may suggest possible psychotropic drug use.

PLOS ONE: Prescription Drugs Associated with Reports of Violence Towards Others

I understand the difference between correlation and causation. None of the links provided concerning medication show causation, only correlation. The most recent one (PLOS ONE:...) shows that the people that have committed some violence against others, a disproportionate number were taking antidepressants.
What more is there to understand than correlation?
