Sales tax has the one distinct advantage of hitting those who otherwise slide by without paying. Those that get paid under-the-table, those that make their money from illegal things like drugs, etc.
But, even with the raping I got this year, I can't complain too much about the taxes. It's the uncontrolled spending and blatant waste that are the real problem.

Agree about the spending. The spending is the more important discussion, than the method the taxes are collected.
Today there already are a bunch of people who avoid taxes by being paid under the table. And less yachts that have tax write offs because they are "business expenses". But I think with a straight sales tax there may be fewer total dodgers. Especially if the cost of gov't were only say, 15%.

And this is why I can't take flat tax proposals seriously. Quote some ridiculously low rate that won't even provide basic services in our current government as a way to sell your plan.

That might be something better suited for a fixed-exchange rate currency versus our current free float currency.
