Wow! Thanks, Obamacare!

I am not sure this is accurate. I'm trying to find a reputable primary or secondary source, but I was under the impression that if your employer offered health insurance, you were not eligible to purchase a plan through the exchanges.
Okay, upon further review, I think you may be technically corret. If you have employer-sponsored health insurance with premiums that are less than 9.5% of your income, I do not think you can purchase through the exchanges.
However, if the employer-sponsored plan has its premium go up so much that you now are paying over the 9.5% threshold, you are eligible for those exchanges.
If you made $50k, your employer-sponsored insurance premiums (your cost) would need to be over $4,750 per year ($396/month) to break that threshold. I suppose that's possible from what some of you are saying. [2nd edit: This cost comparison is only for what an individual plan would costs you; not what you might be paying for a family plan.]
[1st edit: Correction. I guess you can buy from the exchanges no matter what, but you are only going to be eligible for subsidies to reduce the premium costs if your ESHI is considered "unaffordable" (>9.5%).]

Obamacare Restrictions Lead Brooklyn Couple To Consider Divorce « CBS New York
CBS 2’s Don Champion spoke to one Brooklyn couple on Wednesday who said they may be forced to get a divorce to get health insurance.
Nona Willis Aronowitz and Aaron Cassara’s love affair began at a party in 2008.
“We kissed on a bean bag chair,” Aronowitz said.
A year later, it grew into a marriage at City Hall in Manhattan.
“It was really sudden,” Aronowitz said. “It was basically because he needed health insurance, and I had a job that would give that to him.”
But four years later, there is now irony in the fact the couple could soon divorce for the same reason.
“After Obamacare has rolled out, we realized that we would save thousands of dollars if we got divorced,” Aronowitz said.
The issue for Aronowitz and Cassara is that together as family of only two, they make more than the $62,000 level to qualify for subsidies under the Affordable Care Act. But if they lived together unmarried, they would qualify for the subsidies and could literally save hundreds of dollars a month on their health care.
A single person can qualify for subsidies if they make less than $46,000 a year.
“It’s really complicated,” Aronowitz said. “Go on the website, you’ll see what I mean.”
Aronowitz, a freelance writer, and Cassara, who works as a freelancer in the film industry, lost their health coverage recently when Aronowitz was laid off.
Critics of the Affordable Care Act have called the pricey decision couple faces the “marriage penalty.” But the income levels for subsidies were set by Congress.
“I’m an educated, very well plugged-in person and I can’t figure it out,” Aronowitz said.
Aronowitz said she and her husband are deeply in love but together were never the “marrying type.” Still, they said they’re not taking the decision ahead of them lightly.
“In our case, it would be worth it,” Aronowitz said. “In other people’s cases, where marriage is really, really important to them and they had this big wedding and it was this sacred experience, I think it would be a really tough decision for them.”
The couple is looking at other health options before making the divorce decision.

I am sorry that they are finding themselves in this situation based on assurances they got from me
I want to apologize to you that the website has not worked as well as it should
We weren't as clear as we needed to be in terms of the changes that were taking place
I meant what I said

It seems that within a few weeks of the ACA websites going live (and the not live, and then kind of live), somebody managed to write a simple, easily-navigable website that lets you input nothing more than zip code and a few basic pieces of information (age, income, etc) to compare the costs of various ACA-compliant plans.
HealthSherpa
Pretty nifty how three smart guys made a more useful website than our Federal government managed.

I used that same comparison a couple of years ago at work, referring to the amount of time that had gone into trying to make one particular technology work correctly. Specifically, I drew a chart illustrating the length of time which it took to put a man on the moon, defeat Germany (both times), construct the Hoover Dam (etc etc etc) and, finally, to debug a specific piece of software.

If anyone listens to the podcast This Week in Tech, one of the round table discussion guys was the former Chief Technology Officer for the Obama administration (2012 campaign). They had a fairly good discussion on how screwed up the job awarding system is and he went on a pretty good rant about it.

I work at a state job, if I want to do something that costs more that $1000 I have to send out an RFP.

I just did my benefits package for next year at work, and im amazed.... the Price went from $4.25 per month, to $142.66 per month (i know thats still pretty damn good CONSIDERING.... but still...), and the actual coverage was cut in half, and the deductible has doubled.
But....... at least my Dental insurance is still free..... lol
