sorry for digging this up, but i'm going back and forth between a tial 0.64 and a 0.86 housing. it'll be on a FM built 1.6 though which doesn't flow anywhere as well as any of the 1.8's. Would it be better to go for the 0.64 to make up for the crappy flowing 1.6 IM/head? it'll be a street/occasional track car, going for the 300s if possible

I would take the .64 and run a little more boost.

Why are you building up a 1.6?

My GT2560 did 270 whp on a Dynapack with a restricitve 2.5" exhaust system that had 9 psi of backpressure. With my new 3" exhaust which shows <5 psi, I betcha it'll do > 280 hp.

For 300 whp I wouldn't go with a 0.86 on either a GT2860RS nor a GT2871.
And most especially not a street car with a 1.6.

Have you driven either? Is he using a tubular or log manifold? I say .86 GT2860rs at 16-18psi.

Has anyone put a .64 A/R housing on a GT2860rs and like it? If the little housing will work on any Miata it would be a 1.6.

I have a .86 housing I will sell you on the cheap if the .64 doesn't work out...but I think the larger housing is the way to go from the start.

I have a 0.64 on the way.
For a street car one should go with the smallest turbo that hits your power goals.

See this is where you and me completely disagree. I'm not saying one should go with some ginormous mammoth snail for 200whp or something, but I am a firm believer of slightly oversized turbos.

Just a matter of opinion of course, but I think each has their pros and cons and its really up to how you like your power to be delivered.

yeah it was already built when I bought it. running a tubular manifold built by full race... who thought a gt35 sized turbo would be an appropriate turbo for this motor..... -_-

stock 1.6 head or some work done to it?

2871 will get 280 easily, i say just go with .64 and dont worry about it too much.

I still stick by .64, because it sounds like this will primarily be street car. 280 really your goal or you prob gonna keep pushing it?

i'm not the OP, i just muddied up the thread with my 1.6 talk. I'd like to be in the 300whp range, but sav says the 2871 isn't a good fit for the 1.6 and that i should just ditch the motor entirely for a vvt 1.8.

Buy both and figure out which you like better. Plus then you will have more actual experience to answer this question when it gets asked again in the future.

ah yeah, lol. I noticed right before I clicked this thread again that you are not OP.

Swapping turbine housings is pretty quick and easy, and not too expensive either. Swapping motors seems excessive, when you already have a built 1.6....
