Default 16G+Miata+??=Oh $%^#

Hi, everyone...this is my first post on miata turbo. Well im really posting for my brother. I myself play with dsms. But we are looking for some input on his setup. He has a 1992 5spd miata with Protege Pro H beam rods and is running pistons from a 1989 323 gtx with compression ratio of 8.7:1. He also installed the obx 256 cams, along with XTD stage 3 clutch n flywheel and he is currently awaiting a 16G turbo kit. Now our concerns are fuel, management, and logging. The only guage he currently has is a boost guage, and is considering eventually getting a wide band. But before he gets ahead of hiself I wanted to get some first hand knowledge, experience, and advise from people that have done it already. The big question is, what else do he need to run this set up safely. We also have some 350cc injectors from a 1g auto dsm laying around. But this is still his login name for future reference.

Hopefully its not his DD, with all that ebay **** on there. The clutches are supposed to be alright, but ive heard of people on this forum(juhanis, and others i believe?) replacing everything on that turbo kit (im assuming its the ebay 16g kit) except the oil lines/manifold and even had it crack(also if it comes with an intercooler that should be just fine).

Other than that, maybe some tan top 1.8l miata injectors(those 350s might idle weird), and a fuel pump. Dont forget to retard the timing, epically if not intercooled. And if you want to be certain, i would buy a wideband asap.

i think gtx pistons will put you at 7.8:1 and i think 1g auto injectors are 390cc. anyway i think megasquirt would be your best bet and keep the boost down till you get bigger injectors and a wideband is a must....these cars are nothing like a dsm

First, go read the FAQ like Brain said... it will give you the basics you need to know to ask the right questions. It will probably answer just about everything you have on your mind right now. It's at the top of the DIY forum. GO READ IT!

Second, is this the eBay kit in question:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/mazda...spagenameZWDVW
If so, return it. That kit is crap. You will be very disappointed upon opening the boxes and seeing that everything is cheap china-****. Plus, half of the stuff in it will be scrapped if you go Megasquirt.

It sounds like you've got some skills and want at least a little cash, so do yourself a favor and do it right from the beginning. Ebay is good for a lot of things, but a $999 turbo kit isn't one of them.
Check out www.bellengineering.net and www.flyinmiata.net

Once you've read the FAQ and checked out Bell and FM, you'll know what I'm talking about.

So you have bought a 16g ebay kit...goodluck...i have a friend with the same setup and would like to share...don't even use the manifold sell it and buy an hks. universal ic sucks/goodluck! the IC is okay...none of the fittings fit...goto a shop and ask for studs for the turbo and downpipe bolt. you need to get a fitting for the oilfeed to the block. don't use the oil lines...they are low temp cheap stuff...will crack the frist week you drive it.. for more info PM me anything...your injectors will not work! DSM injector are low impendance...require you to wire a resistor box...too much trouble just buy some Hi Impedance from a RX7 FCs...there are some that are plugnPlay some are square and will fit obdzero honda injector plug with little coustomize with razorblade...

A 16g won't bolt to an HKS. The flanges are wrong.

Well due to these responses, we are leaning heavily toward selling the kit and cutting the losses on shipping (2nd day) :( . But we are leaning toward a DYI kit.

Heh, yeah, buy his stuff.

I'm not a 1.6 guy, but it sounds like that's a pretty built bottom end, no? A 16g sounds a little girly for a big bottom end like that. :-)

Definately get some aftermarket ECU action going, the MS (in true DIY form) will run you under $700 if you get everything all bling and that's including a brand new wideband! Add a knocksenseMS in there (probably still in that budget) and you'll have something with very few limits.

The other thing about miatas: Don't second day the kit. Learn how to be fast in the car pre-turbo. OMG have my driving skills deteriorated since I got the turbo..... The car doesn't need the power. Then, adding it in is just funny and feels like cheating.

I'm here to kick you over the fence towards selling the POS kit you already bought. Do it DIY.

Megasquirt for engine management, and 390cc injectors are gonna be small. Get a set of Rx7 460s or 550s now.

Bullshit the Megan stuff off ebay works just fine just brace it the 16g is a very nice turbo for the miata. I do recomend the MS route though;

Then his 16G does not have a standard 16G turbine housing because the mitsu turbo will not bolt onto the HKS manifold. The bolt pattern is more square then rectangle on the mitsu flange and the port is round not square like the standard T25.
The standard 16g flange looks like this:
I guarantee your own HKS manifold that you say you have doesn't have that same flange.
You can read here if you need more info: https://www.miataturbo.net/forum/sho...t=mitsu+flange
