Default DIY turbo for 1.6 using Subaru parts

I know I'm still way noob and haven't read enough so I may get flamed -- if so, be it.

I would love to turbo my '90. BEGI kits look nice, but I'm not ready to shell out the cash. Hacking up a DIY setup sounds challenging but I could see it being a rewarding learning experience, especially if it actually works.

I have a TD04 off my Subaru. I also have a stock Subaru 2.5" downpipe, maybe I could make it fit on the Miata? My friend has a welder and may be able to help me with the exhaust. I'd need a manifold, the BEGI cast one looks nice. I hear BEGI makes an adapter that will fit the Subaru-style turbo flange, right? I want to order the MS from Braineack. I'd run without an intercooler for a while, at maybe 5-6psi.

Does this sound like a doable worth-while DIY project for a noob? I'm planning on reading Corky's book first and running MS without a turbo for a while just to get comfortable with it.

Thank you (flame suit on).

if you're going to diy you may as well shell out the $150-$200 for the ebay intercooler/piping bits, no point in buying piping that you'll have to replace later anyway (well, I suppose you could more than likely reuse most of it).

for a complete noob the pnp entry level kit from begi using the chinacharger is the best thing to do. If you're skilled at fabbing up parts and welding, as well as know your way around the car/engine/turbo's you will be able to put together a kit like you want. In the end if your goals are just 5-6psi it will cost you roughly the same as the begi and cause more headaches. If you want something with more potential and power, put it together yourself because THEN its worth it.

I hope I'm making sense

If BEGI or someone else makes an adapter to go from the standard T2 inlet (BEGI manifold) to the funky 3 bolt subie inlet AND if your friend will weld your stuff up for free, then it may be worth it. Otherwise the basic BEGI turbo kit with the chinese parts is your best bet.

Thank you, your answers make sense.

I don't mind paying BEGI, their parts look awesome and they are active in the online community which nowadays is almost a must. The quality control of Chinese-made turbo spooks me a bit, but then again if my stock engine grenades I won't loose too much sleep over it.
