pat, the first nut was rounded off, so those things would have helped.

 

I have that set of extractors from irwin and they work greay if you can really beat them on but when they slip of or spin on a nut they really **** you with how bad they chew up the head. Heat is the best option if you have a tourch but even the map gas setups from homedepot really work well for the guy at home. Glad you got that off and all worked out for you.
