Default GT2560R or GT2860RS for my 1.6l miata

Hello guys,
I upgrade my miata with a turbo 2 years ago.
well this winterbreak i want to upgrade my turbocharger, downpipe and exhaust manifold.
Following parts i prefer:
BEGI S4 Exhaust Manifold 1989-1993 BEGi
BEGI Miata Turbo S4 Separated Gases Downpipe 1989-1993 BEGi

but i am not sure which turbo would be the best for me.
at the moment i got a t3 i think. it got his max boost (9,5PSI) at 3100rev's. but till then 4000-4500rev's it really got lots of power (hope you understand)

My new setup should be driven with ~12PSI.

So what turbo recommend for my setup?

Thanks so far!
Greets,
Basti

Didnt you say in the past that the 2860 sucks in a 1.6??

Yeah, I tuned/drove a 2860RS on an FM 1.6 and the delay of power between gears was awful.

You realize that 12 psi on different turbo's will give you different results right?

OP, you should speak in terms of power. If im not mistaken 12 psi out of a 2860 could be in the 230-240 whp

Hello again,
yes i know that 12psi on diffrent turbos got diffrent whp.

back to the turbos...

so the 2860 got a really more bad spool up then a 2560 on a 1.6l?
so you all would prefer a 2560?

How puch psi do you think that i can drive with a 2560 or 2860 with 360ccm injectors and walbro 190 fuel pump?

Yes, i also drove a 2860 1.6l, the same one Savington tuned. The spool was horrible. Now the 2560 on my 1.8l is awesome. I think thats a happy medium for a 1.6l between power and spool.

Upgrade your injectors if you max them out.

2860- If im not mistaken has the same inlet turbine as the 2560 ( 60mm). However the 2560 has a smaller exhaust turbine if you will. It all really comes to what is really your goal. Ive read/seen member with a the 1.6/2860 combo and they love it. From what they say you will see boost at around 4k rpm depending on how many lbs you boost. I recommend you look at "I want your spool data" so you get an idea of the spool.

I personally have the 2860 is in the garage floor so I dont know how good/bad it is. However if the spool is that bad Ill just get the $150 chinacharger that braineack bought from ebay, surprisinly those things seem realiable and cheap as hell.

How many PSI will max your injectors?? theres an equation in "All you need to know" thread in the DIY section, but if I were you Ill get 460cc+ your 360cc will be replaced eventually anyway.

No the turbine and compressor wheels on the 2860 are completely different than the 2560.

Snowboarder, Sav, was the 2860 on a 1.6 with the 0.86 a/r?

I got a 2560 because it fit my goals perfectly. Once I got to those goals I realized that the car was nowhere close to scary fast like I'd expected. I really wish I'd gone with a bigger turbo so I'd have some room to grow. IMO, set your goals, add 50whp to them and pick the turbo that fits best.

If you have to change turbo's. Go 2560 for the 1.6L. By 3250rpms boost rockets. i ran 13psi on 440's. At 14psi the injectors started to max.

It is a straight blast.

And Corkey bell recomends the 2560 for the 1.6L. I was going to buy Hustlers 2871 when he was talking about selling. Corkey talked me out of it since I just street the car.

But why change from the T3???? If you have 9psi by 3100, It sounds perfect.

That and I'm cheap. Isn't th T3 one of the most versital turbo's. Can't you change the wheels, for just about anything you want?

Someone with T3 knowlege chime in...............I just switched to a T3 1.6l car.

I am not entirely sure, but i hope to god it was a .86 because it was no fun waiting for that boost to pickup.

Yeah, it was a .86. Anyone looking for the kind of power a 2860RS makes should be looking at a .86 housing anyway, though. I could be wrong, but I think that's why rharris isn't making the power he wants out of his S6 kit - restrictive hotside.

BTW - I tuned and drove the exact same setup (Bell S3) on a 1.9 liter motor and it was perfect. Displacement ftw.

The GT2860 supposedly has a very high efficiency turbine; the 0.64 a/r may work ok on a 1.6 wrt spool. The high efficiency turbine gives it its power potential / spool combo (with a 0.64 that is).

I want to switch my T3 cause i want to buy a new exaust manifold and the new one will get a T25 socket. So i can't use my T3. And also is only oil bearinged.

Hm....so the most of you would recommend the 2560, but in the last post the guy write a 2860rs with .64 a/r would be also nice?

I really can't decide it

I make 13psi at like 3600RPM on that last turbo. Notice the similarities between the 60 trim T3 & the 2560 and the super 60 T3 & the 2860?

The actual turbine wheel of the GT2860 is very different than the GT2560. It has something like 9 blades instead of 11.

To the OP:

For <250 whp the GT2560 is definitely a much better turbo for the street, because it will spool quicker and have better midrange response. On the street, response and midrange are very important. For <230 whp the GT2554 (smaller still), is even better.

yes, and the compressor blade designs between the T3 and the new turbos has been improved as well. just putting the raw numbers out there to compare.
