I want your spool data!

If some of you remember this thread: https://www.miataturbo.net/forum/sho...ighlight=spool

we started collecting spool-up rates of various turbo setups and threw them into a chart.

I would like to collect new data and try again.

So please respond using the follow example:

Engine: '93 1/6L
Turbo: T3 Super 60 .48 A/R
Manifold: BEGi Cast "Directed Pulse"
Downpipe Size/Style: Single tube 2.5" to 2.75"
Exhaust Size: 2.75" to 3"
Exhaust Components: Louvered resonator & Magnaflow Muffler
Intercooler Core Size: 18"x12"x3"
Intake Manifold: Stock
Headwork: Mild Porting, deshrouding, blended bowl
Engine Management: Megasquirt
Other Spoolin' Helpers/Hurters: Toyota COPs
Trans & Rear End Ratio: 5-speed, 4.1 LSD
Rear tire size: 205/45-16

FOURTH GEAR PULL:

RPM Boost(psi)
2250 1.88
2300 2.46
2400 2.9
2500 3.48
2600 3.77

3300 10.7
3400 11.75
3500 12.2

Leave it on topic, or posts will get deleted. Try to take the log in 4th gear to keep things constant, and start the pull from 2K. Have fun, don't need to keep pulling to 7K and go +100mph ;)

OK the new and improved graph is posted above. The xls file is attached to this post so if you want to change the plot or add your data, go for it.

Cueball's boost slope is nuts! Pipefathers is pretty steep too.

It is also interesting that Brain and TurboTim took two completely different approaches and ended up with practically identical spool behavior.

JasonC no offense but are you sure about your numbers? Our setups are pretty similar but yours is spooling 500 rpm sooner with a clogged cat?

Of course the other factor here is efficiency and how that translates into power. It would be interesting to see a 3-D plot with power added as a third axis.

Braineack 10-03-2008 08:40 AM

I updated my log as well...I copied from an old thread just to start the thread, I had new data to share.

Yea I know, I updated my post and played innocent. I see you did the same?!

m2cupcar 10-03-2008 03:50 PM

I changed closed loop spike suppression settings and pulled an entire 100rpm off my spool from 3500 - 4300 rpm (where I hit 17.1). But now I spike nearly 1 psi over my target. Worth it I suppose. Just need to fix the droop on the other side of the spike. If I can get a decent boost line I'll drop my muff for a straight pipe and do a log. PipeFather needs to post his spool with just the open downpipe!

The_Pipefather 10-03-2008 07:30 PM

Yea definitely. I did do a log when I wasnt running EBC yet and I hit wastegate opening pressure about 700 rpm sooner. My fucking laptop crashed soon after so I have no proof.

So yeah, I have no doubt that this would be the quickest spooling setup bar none when i have an exhaust that's worth a shit.

Braineack 10-04-2008 12:20 AM

Hey I don't think my T3 is doing too shabby, fits right in with an inefficient 2560 1.8L setup. headwork FTW.

The_Pipefather 10-05-2008 09:41 PM

Cool, it now appears that I have the quickest-spooling 1.6 out there. Feels good to know that my analysis (number 1 andnumber 2 ) was spot on. I really need to log a run with only the downpipe and post back.

Braineack 10-05-2008 10:28 PM

but my turbo is like 3x the size :)

The_Pipefather 10-05-2008 10:29 PM

But are you making 3X the power? :D

we'll find out Friday when i go back to the dyno ;) but no, no I'm not.

y8s 10-05-2008 11:14 PM

scott, on your chart, can you beef up the lines on the legend? they're teeny.

PS what time on friday?

Braineack 10-05-2008 11:16 PM

and technically my wheel compares to yours like this:

tdo4l-13T

Turbine
EX: 41.14mm IN: 47.24mm

Compressor
IN: 40.64mm EX: 56.01mm
420CFM / 265 HP

Super 60

Turbine
EX: 48.72mm IN: 58.9mm

Compressor
IN: 48mm EX: 60mm
500CFM / 315 HP

y8s, I'll see what I can do about the legend. Noonish at Moore's automotive in Fairfax.

m2cupcar 10-05-2008 11:28 PM

are you posting specs for all turbos listed in the spool chart? ;)

Savington 10-06-2008 05:10 AM

Posting this too because jesus I want a VVT head :eek5:

user PhilMD at m.net
Engine: '01 longblock, Weisco 9:1 +1mm pistons
Turbo: GT2560R
Manifold: AVO
Downpipe Size/Style: AVO, unknown size
Headwork: unknown, VVT head
Engine Management: MoTeC
Other Spoolin' Helpers/Hurters: VVT, VVT, and...vvt.
Transmission 6-speed

FIFTH GEAR PULL:

RPM Boost(psi)
2500rpm - 7.9psi
2750rpm - 11.1psi
3000rpm - 14.2psi
3250rpm - 16.2psi
3500rpm - 16.6psi

cueball1 10-06-2008 02:05 PM

Updated- 5th gear freeway pull from low rpm. Much better example.

Engine: '94 1/8L
Turbo: GT2860rs
Manifold: BEGi S4 stainless tubular
Downpipe Size/Style: BEGI divorced
Exhaust Size: 2.5"Exhaust Components: Magnaflow Muffler, metal cat
Intercooler Core Size: 18"x8"x3"
Intake Manifold: Stock
Headwork: none
Engine Management: Megasquirt
Other Spoolin' Helpers/Hurters: Toyota COPs, lead foot,

5th GEAR PULL:

RPM Boost(psi)
5th gear pull VS. 4th gear pull (avg of 3 pulls)
1925 = 1psi = 1863
1985 = 2psi = 2060
2115 = 3psi = 2225
2335= 4psi = 2456
2460 = 5psi = 2549
2628= 6psi = 2733
2735= 7psi = 2880
2790= 8psi = 2990
2880= 9psi = 3090
2960= 10psi = 3190
3061= 11ps = 3250
3135= 12psi NA (no overboost)
3260= 13psi NA (no overboost)

OK, my 1st one sucked. It was taken from a track day in a low gear, revs never dropped low enough.

Here is a log from a 5th gear pull on the freeway this morning from 1900 rpms. Much better! Please correct my shameful 1st one on the xls chart! :bowrofl:

cueball1 10-06-2008 02:40 PM

If I had any idea how to make or modify that chart I would do it myself. Sucks to be older with little knowledge of xls basics.

i have office 2007 at home which makes the chart look pretty and sharp. looks like ass off the older verison.

anyways, clearly see 5 groupings: The super spoolers. The 2554 and 2560s. The T3s. The large trims. And the super large trims.

interesting to see how my boost build compared to chad with same turbo manifold and exhaust. looks like my headwork may help me below 3K, despite my 200cc less. granted I'm still making 200cc less power :(

y8s 10-06-2008 02:59 PM

gimme the dataz.

ZX-Tex 10-06-2008 03:03 PM

I plotted Cueball's data cause I am at home sick today and freaking bored. I cannot repost the new graph since I am using Open Office and a lot of the Excel formatting is lost in translation.

But, Cueball's spool is right in there with the 2560 plots. Very nice! The only thing I can see in his setup to explain this is the S4 manifold. If that is the case, then it seems like a 2860 with an S4 could be a good choice for the street since it still spools nicely and should be a bit more efficient than the 2560.

JasonC SBB 10-06-2008 03:23 PM

Wow, I was gonna say, cueball's data looks close to mine, and THEN I realized it's a GT2860 on an NA 1.8 head. Damn!!!!

I made my own. includes cueball's latest. and some dude named PhilMD.

Braineack 10-06-2008 03:32 PM

scale it from 0-15psi and 1750-4100RPM.

cueball1 10-06-2008 03:47 PM

Thanks guys! That plot was on my freeway commute this morning. Got out ahead of traffic, dropped to 1500rpms in 5th and floored it. Overboosted to 13psi until the EBC kicked in and dropped back. Let off then. 2.5" enthuza with race cat. Corky talked me out of the 2560 in favor of the 2860 on my system. Now I know why.

All those super-charger guys talking about instant spool and flat torque can kiss my lily white behind.

what fer

The_Pipefather 10-06-2008 07:00 PM

how about grouping into 3 or 4 categories- of course the 1.6's have to be kept in a separate graph ;)

What's a race cat? A resonator that looks like a cat?

Or a feline with racing stripes? (LOL I shaved one of my long-haired cats once because I was tired of his shedding, and started with racing stripes)

paul 10-06-2008 08:08 PM

Note to self:
  1. Ballast the car to bring it up to the same weight as the rest of these pigs to increase load and improve spool
  2. Do a pull from 1000rpms to inflate results over real world scenario
  3. do pull in 5th gear to increase load and improve spool

m2cupcar 10-06-2008 09:02 PM

If you did that, Tim would just remove one of his turbos and spank everybody. ;) And yes, I think it was mentioned to make pulls/data 1:1. So cueball, you need to do a fourth gear run for relative placement in the data.

hustler 10-06-2008 10:20 PM

cueball's line is making my pants tight...in the bad place. That turbo with 120cc more, the 99-head, and ebc should get the job done.

Braineack 10-06-2008 10:21 PM

i better be making +260rwhp at 15 pounds on friday.

BenR 10-07-2008 11:27 AM

Engine: '91 1.6L
Turbo: G15
Manifold: Greddy
Downpipe Size/Style: Turbotony
Exhaust Size: 2.5"Exhaust Components: Custom 3" cat back, turbo tony cat
Intercooler Core Size: Starion
Intake Manifold: Stock
Headwork: none
Engine Management: Megasquirt
Other Spoolin' Helpers/Hurters: 4500ft-5500ft. elevation, mild built motor, fidanza flywheel act 6 puck, spring and ball MBC.

4th GEAR PULL:

RPM Boost(psi)

2926= 3.3psi
2985= 3.8psi
3111= 5.3psi
3384= 7.2psi
3445= 8psi
3471= 8.8psi
3562= 10.8psi
3628= 11.8psi
3671= 12.8psi
3775= 14.3psi
4003= 15psi

I based the psi numbers by subtracting an assumed 1 atmosphere of 12.46 from my map values. This isn't entirely accurate because the altitude of my city changes so much depending on what part of town you are in and I didn't want to break out the GPS. I estimated on the low side of 4500ft.
