Sav, if the CHRA and compressor housing are no use to you, I'll be happy to take them on the cheap.

You were the first person I thought of, but Garrett wants the CHRA back on exchange.

you're such a sweetie pie.

are they replacing it for free fifty free?

neogenesis2004 08-18-2009 03:01 PM

Probably more like five hundred fifty five

Well...you could clean up (or not) the turbine blades and try it..what's the worst that an happen, you fuck up the center section ;) That's already gone.

EDIT: nevermind, yeah you could also f up your compressor. Hmmm. Nevermind.

$466.30, actually. Going through ATP since I live half an hour from them.

One interesting note about the CHRA exchange program - they don't give a fuck about the actual condition. It's based purely on the part number, and whether or not you disassembled the turbo or not. It could be as simple as a chewed up wheel, or as massive as a bent shaft and two destroyed wheels/bearings, it makes no difference to them. It's $xxx off, and they mail a brand new one out.

There's something on the car that uses this; I remember having to hammer them flat to remove the bolts.

Yeah, I've seen those around tons. I didn't bother bringing it up since I thought everyone knew. :-P And predrilled bolts aren't hard to find, but for this I like the pair-wise-bendy-tabs.

Glad to see you'll be getting it back on the road. I've seen people run ridiculous chewed up missing blade turbos and make decent power, but your efficiency will be gone, and while it's worth the risk to a valueless turbo, it's not to something awesome like you've got. Plus, blowing chunks out the exhaust is one thing, sucking them into your head is another. Too much to lose.

Yep. I was just talking last week with a tech at Blacktrax about how they had had chunks of turbo make it through intercoolers, too. Not worth sacrificing a $2500 motor to a $400 CHRA.

dc2696 08-18-2009 09:38 PM

To be honest I don't think there's a chance in hell the bolts that hold the turbine housing to the chra backed out. (Unless you have an exhaust system that is too heavy or placing too much load/weight on your turbo that is improperlly secured/flex-jointed thus giving you all these bolt issues)

You likely forgot to torque them, and more safety wire or tabs is not going to do a dam thing.

Also please don't fuck around and try to use that turbine wheel, that's just a bad idea on a race car.

Except for the part where I actually removed the turbo from the car, tightened all 12 at once, and then put the turbo back in the car. I distinctly remember taking a 10mm box wrench and tightening all 6 of them.

Ok so what's the deal with your exhaust system then, you got some lex joints and proper mounts ect?
I cracked my SS mani last year tracking because my exhaust was putting to much load on the turbo (and thus the mani)

I have never heard of anyone having this problem in any of the turbo racecars that race around here

The exhaust housing stayed put fine. It's the CHRA and compressor housing that came off of the exhaust housing. His manifold is perfectly fine. If anything, using your logic it would have been the intercooler piping putting stress on the turbo.

edit: Oh, and nice hood risers. :giggle:

Fuck me am I ever useless today, what the hell was I thinking lol.

And the hood risers are a long story:giggle: (and sadly they are on there for good)

Sorry for misinterpreting your problem Sav :P My bad.

I'm still for the thing being cocked on there. Even if only a bit. Certainly nothing else so far has made any sense, unless you out-and-out decide not to trust him when he says he tightened them.

My charge pipe has fallen off the compressor outlet 4 times in 4 days after staying put for a year. While frustrating, all that happens is a funny "pooooof" sound and 10 minutes to try it again at a different angle. If you're feeling jealous, you should be. Except for the extra 400 lbs and 30 less hp.

Let him beat on your car on track. You will get through a day without a long list of bullshit that can NOT hold up to abuse, just your street driving.

didn't know garrett was doing anything. thought you were just out. for sure i'd send it back if they were giving any kind of discount.

ZX-Tex 08-19-2009 12:08 PM

Sav just saw this thread, not sure why I missed it before. I feel your pain.

Yep I am the one that lost a GT2871 to poor application of teflon tape. Felt like an idiot. I also tapped into the Garrett CHRA exchange program, and ran it through ATP (via BEGI).

I'll be using resbond on my turbine bolts, and some kind of threadlocker on the compresor nuts. That or safety wire. If those bolts are metric, mcmaster will not have them pre-drilled, standard sizes only. If you figure out where to get some, let me know. I can drill them, but buying them is a lot easier.

Yeah, Garrett does have that program which is nice. I don't know what a CHRA normally costs but I'm sure it's not cheap. You can send in DESTROYED CHRAs (bent shaft, fucked wheels, etc) and they will still give you the full discount, too. You just have to not disassemble it, ever.

Cody Strife 08-19-2009 02:28 PM

I think you need to try and get a refund and invest in a better built turbo, such as the IHI-RBF-5 that is used in the Mazdaspeed Miatas'. :)

inferno94 08-19-2009 04:47 PM

Sucky situation to be in, I had this happen on an IHI turbo once but it got louder when the 1st bolt came out. I was able to get off the road asap and (eventually) fix it before chewing blades.

My experience was on a turbo that I had been using daily for 3 years then one day...
