neogenesis2004 06-27-2007 12:44 PM

I love what you are doing with the rad and ic. I might have to copy that.

Splitime 06-27-2007 01:01 PM

Anyone that wants details of anything let me know... Until car is fully together... I can snap pictures of wierd stuff :p

Braineack 06-27-2007 01:05 PM

finally asshole!!!! looks awesome....how are you planning to cut the hood?

Thats currently a heated debate in the garage amongst buddies :p

I had originally planned on 3 of the H style cuts (as i photoshopped in the old thread)

But we are thinking maybe just one single big H... that is exactly the width of the intercooler... so that we can add metal to the sides of it and handle some ducting while reinforcing....

y8s 06-27-2007 01:13 PM

how did you feel about cutting out the front crossbeam behind the bumper? is it pretty solid with the U-tubing under the radiator?

and gantry mill ftw.

SOL General 06-27-2007 01:17 PM

What rear air diffuser is that?

cueball1 06-27-2007 01:35 PM

Holy Shnikies! This guy's serious. Way trick on the rad/ IC set up. Sick jealous seeing a guy with the tools, time and skills. That's a big project to get done in pretty much a week. Good luck.

Splitime 06-27-2007 01:56 PM

Difuser is an old STR product. Was mostly marketed to honda crowd. It's basically a trim piece... I got it in a trade... otherwise you'd just see holes :p

The tubing is 1.5" .083... its strong stuff. That front end is more solid than it ever ever was before. Took before and after measurements to ensure straightness... all good :)

Garage and tools are not mine sadly... but having great buddies helps. We are looking forward to getting it all done... its alot to do.

Jeremy is the fabricator (you see him in a few pictures). He's barely out of highschool and his skills amaze. Each project he takes on just gets better. His brother and I like pushing the projects too ;). Heck... you should see the fab work he does on Maximas...

Newbsauce 06-27-2007 02:08 PM

Thats some really impressive shit. :) Keep up the good work.

Arkmage 06-27-2007 02:28 PM

how flimsy is the hood without all the bracing? I've been think'n about doing the same to mine.

Splitime 06-27-2007 02:34 PM

With how much I took out of the front section... quite. But my vent will reinforce there and the metal to fill the headlight areas will also add back in.

It'll get hoodpinned and then should be fine once my stuff is done with it.

If used as is... i doubt it would survive up front. I left pretty much no skeleton up there :p

jayc72 06-27-2007 02:36 PM

What are these?

http://www.we-todd-did-racing.com/th...8Medium%29.jpg[/

Splitime 06-27-2007 02:42 PM

jayc72- That's the velocity stacked baseplate for the custom intake manifold.

jsisco 06-27-2007 02:42 PM

Intake runners... he will build his intake manifold around those. :bigtu:

EDIT: https://www.miataturbo.net/forums/sh...?t=4127&page=3
He has pictures of a Honda manifold fabricated this way in the link.

FearGS 06-27-2007 02:48 PM

lookin sick!

cueball1 06-27-2007 04:02 PM

I was thiniking they were going to be DIY IRTB's.

jayc72 06-27-2007 04:14 PM

Ah, the location on the rad had me confused.

MiataNuTca 06-27-2007 04:35 PM

Sweet project....looks like something I would want to do when I retire. Make sure you don't leave any beer bottles in weird places.

RusMan 06-27-2007 05:34 PM

Love it, love it, love it. Great progress so far, can't wait to see more!

akaryrye 06-27-2007 06:22 PM

thats really cool stuff man, I wish I had the time, tools, skills, knowhow, etc to bust out a project like that. I am only just getting comfortable with some of the more simple things at this point :)

Stripes 06-27-2007 06:25 PM

Wow! I can't wait to see more pics!

that7guy 06-27-2007 07:06 PM

Awesome build. Cant wait til i see it finished!

getsidewaysd1 06-27-2007 07:34 PM

SloS13 06-27-2007 09:37 PM

boly balls. Awesome work.

Snowsurfer03 06-27-2007 10:30 PM

SKILLZ THAT KILL!!! POST MORE PICS ASAP!!!

hazimwood 06-27-2007 11:34 PM

Awesome skills, and awesome buildup. Dont want to be nit-picky but shouldn't you have welded the front support beams on before cutting the radiator support in half... you might have to get the frame aligned now that you did do it that way.

Nope, took measurements pre and post... identical. That area of the frame just wasnt under enough stress with the motor being suspended and everything up on jackstands.

Just got home... I'll post more pictures tomorrow morning.

Reid 06-28-2007 09:59 AM

Where are those pics? :vash:

Splitime 06-28-2007 10:19 AM

Intake manifold is done.
Downpipe is done (forgot pictures sorry :(.... its SS and 3")
Mocked up RX7 Oil cooler
Mounted bov
Cut hood (needs the supports and headlight blockoffs still)
New clutch slave cylinder
probably other stuff... but this is it for now

uhhhh....just a little badass....

cjernigan 06-28-2007 10:33 AM

Man that's kick ass. Are you going to paint/coat the intake mani at all? It's badass but it would look good in black or polished(who the fuck has time).

It's all looking sick though. I want to see how you attach the IC and IM though. Piss on you for no DP pictures.

GTS Miata 06-28-2007 10:37 AM

Sweet! Keep the pictures coming!

I need to learn how to weld...

y8s 06-28-2007 10:42 AM

lookin good. -AN oil drain?

Splitime 06-28-2007 10:50 AM

Yah, using steel AN stuff for it. Can have it made up at a farm supply shop. Measure... tell him fittings and boom SS lines for cheap.

m2cupcar 06-28-2007 10:53 AM

Looks like there's plenty of room for a/c parts! ;) Very crafty! :bigtu:

Newbsauce 06-28-2007 11:30 AM

Looks real slow. ;) Nice manifold

Splitime 06-28-2007 11:39 AM

Considering it has about 1 person pushing power... it is slow right now!

Braineack 06-28-2007 11:51 AM

acutally, word of advice....on the pic with the return fitting....there is a hold with a missing bolt....that points to the front...the a/c bolts into it....if there isn't anything there to plug the hole you'll have a big spill.

Vashthestampede 06-28-2007 12:17 PM

Talk about a project....all I can say is wow. :bigtu: What is the timeline again, start to now?

Splitime 06-28-2007 12:47 PM

Thanks for the catch. Would have completely missed it. This is the first miata/mazda motor I've ever touched ;p

neogenesis2004 06-28-2007 01:15 PM

From looking at my oil pump that spot doesn't have a direct path to the oil flow. The problem is that it is the only bolt for the oil pump on that side of the motor, so if nothing is there then oil can seep out at full oil pressure. Also, on the part drawings from mazda there is a shorter bolt that goes there on cars that have no ac.

Splitime 06-28-2007 01:16 PM

Yah, I can see how its one of the oil pump bolts. Not good to leave it hanging. I'll make sure its the first thing I do tomorrow.

Al Hounos 06-28-2007 01:19 PM

looks awesome.. good to see something different, and functional.

Splitime 06-28-2007 01:28 PM

I think what I love about function... is it leads to form. Something truely functional and done with some attention to detail... can look HOT ;)

Although... I'll admit... I gave into some bling with the valve cover... possibly the first bling item I've ever bought for any of my cars.

Arkmage 06-28-2007 01:43 PM

That's impressive... it would take me over a month to do that IF I had the tools you have and all the parts on the shelf ready to go... hell the V-mount would have taken me a week.

Are you putting the bumper back on or just the cover? I don't like the idea of ditching the bumper since it's only a matter of time before I hit something or something hits me.

Splitime 06-28-2007 01:54 PM

I might toss a bar based 'bumper' under it. Its mainly being built for track duty... but it will be streetable.

I run with minimal bumper pieces on my civic and no issues. I just don't hit things ;)

mazda/nissan 06-28-2007 01:54 PM

how efficient is the radiator and intercooler positioned like that? great build though:bigtu:

Splitime 06-28-2007 02:05 PM

Its designed to be very efficient. They both get fresh air, no interefence from stacking IC/Rad/AC etc... Both have air being pulled through also.

Radiator will have 2 pull through fans under it and behind them is the oil cooler so it'll get air flow also.
Intercooler has hood vent to pull air through at speed.

Technically... it has the ability to be more efficient than traditional setups... hopefully I manage to achieve that... since it is the entire reason for that part of the build.

mazda/nissan 06-28-2007 02:18 PM

i take it the only practical way for that setup is to mutilate the front end huh? too bad i'm too chicken, good luck

Arkmage 06-28-2007 02:22 PM

it's only mutilation if someone fuck up :) otherwise it's "tastefully modified for greater efficiency"

Splitime 06-28-2007 03:14 PM

It can be done without modding the body. Would just take more time and smaller intercooler/radiator. I wanted big and braced... so we cut out useless stuff :p

I'll need to get a ride in this car later. :)
