What's the diameter and length of your filter (i.e. the important part of the equation :bigtu: ).

I recall reading that the oiled cotton filters are able to effectively filter about 6 CFM of air (presumably without being a restriction) for every square inch of surface area.

olderguy 09-13-2006 01:15 PM

Since we are talking filters: I'm using the original Greddy and have it set just where and how I want it. Where can I get replacement filter material?? It is un-oiled and not breaking down, but I don't know how much dust is getting through. Got 25K miles on it and should be thinking about doing SOMETHING.

Nice!

I have the worlds smallest filter, and was in need of such info.

On a side note, can we get braineack a sticky or something? I am aware of the sig. info, but seriously it's a little too hidden for everyone to know about. I bought a bunch of stuff before I saw and clicked the link, which sucked because i'd much prefer supporting this site and its valuable members.

Just an idea.

(last off topic post I swear)

I'm relatively new. Just FYI, I had no idea you offered parts until it was too late. See above about the sticky suggestion, hope thats OK with everyone.

Now that i've been here a while, I "know" and whatever you have that I need, i'm buying from you.

DAMN... I'M SUCH AN A**HOLE!!! I just looked at R2R and Brain beats my Amazon price. All right, I'm totally in favor of buying from the guys around here... as I have sourced a lot of stuff out of our classifieds. I'll definitely look at R2R first from now on. I've got no problem recommending guys to buy from. Not to blow too much smoke up brains rear, but I don't think there's anybody around here who hasn't benefitted from his knowledge/experience.

PS Brain, you're gauge was in the mail yesterday as promised... probably get it tomorrow if not today.

i forgot you had a store sorry braineak

It's ok. I don't really like you guys that much anyways.

samnavy 09-14-2006 04:18 PM

Begi DP is on it's way... well, almost. It's bought and paid for, but none on the shelves. It should be done in about a week and in the mail. My rebuild kit should be here today... turbo tomorrow.

Now the real question. I have no SMOG requirement so am considering test-pipe or gutted cat. It doesn't make any sense to me to spend $60 on a TP when I can dremel a junkyard cat for free. Who has experience here, is it an easy job... I've got the tools. As you can imagine, there are no Miatas in the local U-Pull-It...

But I do have a question. My current RB 4to1 Header is 2" when it bolts to the cat. The Borla Duals are 2.25" when it bolts to the cat. The Begi DP is 2.5" where it bolts to the cat. Is my current cat compatible to the Begi DP? I'll have to get under the car and measure (take a pic too) when I get home.

Also, what's it worth on the dyno??? Cat vs. No Cat? I'm thinking it's worth 5-8hp? Whaddyathink?

RicanmiataRacer 09-14-2006 04:22 PM

turbo cars up to a 20 hp gain with no cat or test pipe, this varys on turbo cars.

kung fu jesus 09-14-2006 04:25 PM

i wouldn't expect the stock cat to be compatible with a 2.5" dp. the RM dp i had with my greddy kit would not mate to a stock cat. i would get a tp or a 2.5" high-flo cat.

RicanmiataRacer 09-14-2006 04:26 PM

actually 20-30hp gain due to freed up exuast flow! I've seen up to 35 in dyno meets

samnavy 09-14-2006 07:18 PM

Here's a pic of the cat. It looks to be a perfect fit for the 2" RB header on the front and just a smidge smaller than the 2.25" Borlas on the back. I guess it's a 2" cat. After looking at it, I'm sure it won't fit.

So what is my cheapest bet here. No way I'm spending $80 on a test pipe. Who do those companies think they're kidding? $2 worth of materials and 2minutes with a welder... $80 my ass!!! So you can be sure I'm not spending $160 on a hi-flow cat when I don't need to smog. Can I just take the cat into a local shop and have them make me up a pipe of the same length?

There is your answer right there. 2 bucks, 2 minutes. Find the right shop (nice and dirty, average dude, pipe laying everywhere) and score that deal. In my experience, chain muffler shops love to overcharge. Because they can.

Really though, if you never need to replace the test pipe with a cat for smog, you don't actually need a test pipe. It would be cheaper to have the muffler guy use a slip fit pipe, with a quick weld. Done.

After reading your other post, this would also accommodate for the size changes, 2.5 to 2.25 slip fit adapter. These are 3 bucks at the auto store, the weld guy gets them cheaper than that.

magnamx-5 09-14-2006 08:43 PM

most muffler shops wont delete your cat for you though for fear of getting in trouble the feds tend to get mad and throw around fines for stuff like that.

RicanmiataRacer 09-14-2006 08:59 PM

They are a bunch of pussies if they are afraid , Hard core muffler shops do it without 2nd thought!

Great ideas, but I really don't want to cut the flanges off the DP or my Borlas... so it looks like I need a local speedshop who understands my "special requirements". I saw a promising place the other day... maybe a stop by after work in uniform is in order!

kung fu jesus 09-14-2006 09:53 PM

can you you find someonw from the maintenance pool to weld one up for you? buy the flanges and get a piece of pipe. find someone to weld it for you off duty.
