Default O2 Defouler on hood exit downpipe?

I am running my DP out my hood and as a result of that my DP is only about a foot long. The O2 bung was welded as far away from the hot side as possible but I'm worried this will put my AEM too close to direct airflow. Should I get one of those "defouler" plugs people use to keep from having to replace my O2 sensor all the time? Or should I be fine to leave it right in the middle of the pipe?

Sounds too short. I'm sure an engine builder could chime in and recommend a primary length and tube size for an RPM range. But will they? IIRC the "old school" method was to use tire crayon and draw a line down the header, and where it quit running was the ideal primary length for that RPM.
