Yeah I kind of decided against it. From my understanding the 01+ head with the 99 head gasket with holes punched in it at the correct location and a reroute is best but an 01+ head with 01+ gasket will do the job. I'm not going to be tracking the car so idk. I could be totally off.

No hole punching.
It's simple, with vvt head:

99 gasket = reroute (optimal)
01 gasket = no reroute (okey)

Has anyone used the Ford escort gt 1.8 pistons? From my understanding the BP block is essentially the same. My confusion is the Pistons for sale are listed as 0.010" over. Would I require different rings for this?

0.010 over means the piston diameter is 0.010" larger than stock. That would require boring the block and getting over-sized rings.

Verify your the bores are good on your current block. If they are, get used oem pistons from a 94-97 USDM miata. Those will be fine for your 300whp goal.

Found these in my searching an I remembered that the escort gt had a bp motor. Same price as used Miata an appears to be OEM.

Alright yeah I guess I should wait until the block gets back. Told them 1.5 for rings an haven't heard back yet.

If the bores are fine then just have them hone the bores. Install stock size pistons with stock size rings. Done.

Sorry to drag this thread on. I was concerned that cyl #4 was screwed up and told the machine shop to call start with that cyl and call me if it needed over an over bore so I could decide on pistons. A couple days ago they called and said that it did not need to be bored over and that the hone was good.

So in my excitement I went ahead and scored a set of OEM from a 94 an ordered my rings. Go to pick up the block an as im leaving he tells me there is a little pitting but not worth and over bore and that it would be fine. The block was all wrapped up an I had to be at work so I didn't inspect it until yesterday.

Any thoughts would be appreciated. Am I just trippin or is that acceptable for the wall? I know you cant gauge depth from the photo and my nail wont really catch on it but I can definitely feel it. I was thinking he meant some pitting below the stroke type thing.



TL;DR: Does this look mucked up?

I'd send it. Especially if the machine said it was fine.

Cylinder pressures are nil at that point. Absolute worst case is a bit of extra oil consumption

Alright. Thanks. My stomach lurched when I first saw it... My bearings should be in by the end of the week an I'm stressin/nervous to get this back together.

I really need to start a build thread so I don't keep dragging this one up. I'm about to drop the "used but in good condition" 94 pistons I got off ebay that I discovered had these lovely nicks on one. Im getting ready to drop them in but figured I'd post a pic an double check. I took a small file and tried to smooth the bad nicks out. Thoughts?

I did just pick up a 94 with a "crank issue" off CL but I wasnt going to start tearing into that motor until I finished this one. Now I cant decide if I want to go ahead an pull those pistons or just use these. That is the only piston with any damage. Thanks.

Anyone else have any issues with the ring gap of the Mahle 41608 rings being to large out the box? I searched an found one thread from 2014 but that guy hasn't been active in like 3 years.

I'm getting a .021" gap on the top ring and .018" on the second ring.

From my understanding I need around .017" on top ring for my build purpose. The machine shop just did a hone an said it was good for standard rings. Also according to Mahle's ring gap instructions they recommend a larger top ring gap an smaller bottom ring gap which seems to be contrary to the general consensus and what most companies recommend ( a tighter top ring and looser second ring). I'm bout to just say screw it an throw it together but I keep stressing that I'm totally going to muck it up.

God damnit. Nevermind. My answer is totally in my post. Sorry I go brain dead alot, read alot of articles an confuse the **** out of myself by blending info in what's left of my brain. Yes supertech an wisco call for a tighter first ring an looser second. Mahle is the opposite so I am almost spot on. Sorry for the ignorant posts.

I just wanted to thank everyone on this site!.... for helping me almost fail school this semester.... Really though. Thank you MT.net, especially anyone who gave advice or opinions. This is the most awesome site EVER!!! I don't post a lot because I don't know a lot and what I do know is already out there and my build is really just a getto project compared to a lot of others.

Anyway through the wealth of information available on this site I was able to "complete" (I still have a lot to do, clean up wiring, make radiator crowl, airbox for intake, heat shield, body work, etc etc) my first turbo/motor project. I finally got her dropped in yesterday and have a whole whopping 30miles on her right now.

Cut the first drive filter open and no big bits, no leaks. sounds good. I feel like a virgin that just got his first finger bang I cant wait to get a real taste. She is dirty and ugly but that comes next... or just swap the drivetrain into the "clean" 94 shell..

Thanks again MT for getting me this far.
