does the car ever stop smoking? Try running a restrictor, then see if it stops smoking well you drop to like 30psi of oil at idle. If the smoke stops, you're blowing the seals with too much oil pressure, and should expect to rebuild the turbo in teh future. The problem is not with oil backing up, its too much oil pressure. My car shows like 85psi at 2500rpm when cold, and that will blow oil seals if cold.

So, I have seen a few people here and a few people on other forums talking about a slash pipe in the exhaust. Unless I don't know what I am talking about (very likely <G>) you want airflow THROUGH the cam cover to the intake manifold. If you pull a vacuum on both sides you will not see any airflow. Where am I going wrong here.
BTW, I have no problem welding a nipple at an angle to the exhaust. Actually, I would very much like to do it (more time to play with my new mig welder)!

OH, FWIW, I did some some smoke at the turbo AND the tailpipe today but it really wasn't that bad. I re-welded my turbo manifold last night and I am not sure if that had anything to do with it.
My short term goal was to get the car ready for the drag races next Saturday. I'll be going up against an R4 BRP hotside M62 on a 2001 in our club as well as a 330 HP 2006 Subaru WRX STI (also a club member).

The exhaust will pull vacuum rather than pressurize your vent tube because it's a lot easier to flow out the big exhaust pipe. Because it does flow out the exhaust pipe, past your vent tube, it creates a vacuum and pulls air from the vent tube.
I posted a diagram showing a couple of options for a vent setup.
I installed a MSM style setup on my Miata today in an effort to increase ventilation and catch the crap that was on it's way to the turbo inlet. Originally I was just using the "vent to intake" setup- and it was working as I would find a little residue at the turbo inlet and the hose had some in it. But I still need more venting and wanted to contain the any oil/vapor residue being vented. The need for such mods comes from running boost on a PCV system that wasn't originally designed for such demands (which is why the MSM has an altered/upgraded/different PCV setup than an NA Miata).
The biggest hurdle for a miata to run the exhaust vent setup is getting the vacuum tube past the cat. It works better for hondas because the two points are closer together. I'd say the exhaust vent setup would be a last resort.
As far as your oil smoke- excessive crankcase pressure can push oil past valve seals, especially older seals.
