Default Budget 1.6 turbo build

Hey guys, I just got my first car which is a 1992 super clean sunburst. It has 150,00 miles which is a little high but it is in very good condition. The stock 1.6 is fun and all but it really just needs more power. Next winter I plan on doing a CX Racing turbo kit or piecing together a DIY kit. I plan on pulling the motor, painting the bay and refreshing the 1.6 (Head gasket, studs etc.) My main question would be what will I have to upgrade? I am going to do a clutch but will I have to upgrade the fuel pump and injectors? I only want to run about 5 lbs of boost for the time being but would plan on upping that later on. Next question is what should I do for tuning? I’m from MN so there isn’t many tuners that I know of around here. Would I be safe if I ran a Vortech FMU for a short time before I could afford a mega squirt? Or should I just not waste my time and go for the Mega Squirt right away? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Don't waste your time doing things twice.

I suggest:
1) MSPNP Pro
2) ID1000s
3) VVT swap
4) Trackspeed EFR kit
5) Supermiata clutch
6) DW300 pump
7) Xidas
8) 1.8 rear end swap
9) 6spd swap

Not necessarily in that order. But that list is the goal.

Start looking around this site more. There's a dozen threads exactly like this that will answer every question you asked.

Do it once, do it right. Wait until you can afford a good Megasquirt, and take your time to learn about it before that time.

Also, read the stickies: https://www.miataturbo.net/diy-turbo...b-miata-93402/

realistically, how much money can you dump into this at any given time? how much are you willing to spend over say, two years? This will help us to guide you as we move forward.

Get a megasquirt and learn to tune first.
look at other peoples build threads to figure out what you want your goal to be.
Dont say "ill do whatever it takes to make 5 pounds, then go up from there" build it right or buy it twice.
Make an end-game goal and figure out what you need to get you there. Theres building on a budget, and then theres idiocy.

Jeebus man, read. 30 minutes in the FAQ’s tells you just about everything you need to know. MS3, FF640, FM or Supermiata clutch, MKTurbo. Done.

Compression test your 1.6L. If is has good compression, roll with it.

Well except Lars is too smart to make manifolds for trashcan 1.6s.

You left out the last step. Revert back to naturally aspirated.

Yes yes, but he was asking about turbo-ing his car, not about The Circle Of Life.

When Lars comes out with his fancy new cast 1.8 manifold, I'll get that and sell my 1.6L to the OP. That will give me the motivation to finish off the 1.8 build I've been putting off for months now.
