last i heard... in CA anything modified was illegal.... isn't it? including aftermarket turbochargers and exhausts? at least that's what someone who had an accord told me

I ran 3" all the way back. I had the cat interchangeable with a test pipe. No muffler or resonator... most people would think this was too loud, but personally I liked it. Incredible spool time, and I know that due to the fact the car was very loud that prevented cars from coming in on me on countless occasions.

[QUOTE]

Well anything before the cat has to have a CARB number, and your cat has to be approved by some board or another. And I'm pretty sure the law says modified to be louder(which can't be true, I think there might be 5 cars in all of cali with a stock sound level exhaust) but if you get a ticket for a modified exhaust(sound level doesn't matter, if its modified, its up to the cop to decide if its too loud or not, SRT-4s get tickets for stock exhaust all the time) then you go into the ref and they test it at a specified RPM and its gotta be under like 93dB or 93.5dB or somethin like that.

Stop listening to Accord owners regarding ANYTHING about modified cars.

3" BEGI SSSG DP, 3" Magnaflow metal-core, 3" Enthuza SS. Love it.

I don't even get looked at by cops with the hardtop on.

Can't speak to how this setup performs relative to a 3" setup with a metal-core cat, but I find it to be acceptable. The sound, in particular, is quite pleasing. At idle and light cruise it is very subdued and mellow, and at WOT is sounds "aggressive" without being raspy or tinny (ie: not like a Honda with a fartcan muffler) I should note that the frontal area of the core bed in my cat is probably 2x that of stock, and somewhat more than a circular "metal" cat, which I believe offsets the thicker core material of the ceramic model.

I've also heard a similarly equipped car with an FM dual. That setup was much more "Raw" sounding. Louder and harsher both at idle and while driving.
Do you know what generation of FM dual you were listening to?
I am considering an FM turbo dual and I know they had real issues with the sound of their newer designs. I had heard those issues were addressed but I haven't found anyone who has listened to their current generation (say purchased the last 9 months, or better yet, purchased this year).
I have a custom dual in place now on my 91 using a Magnalow muffler and resonator (and the FM 1.8 high flow cat and downpipe at 2.5 inches); the guys tuning the car thought the exhaust might be limiting the peak power (it flattens out at just over 6.2k rpm at ~205 rwhp).
If it is a flow issue at the back end, I will replace the exhaust but it would be great to have a feel for what it will sound like (the current sound is great, nice low rumble, not overbearing at any speed/rpm).

magnaflows and resonators are straight through....that's not the restriction....it could be the 2.5" but most 1.6Ls start to lose torque at 5-6K when the boost is held constant.....the fix would be an intake manifold....I believe that's where that problem lies.

Interesting, is that true for all of the Magnalow models?

The turbo package is a slightly modified FM 1 (the mod uses a upgraded outlet manifold, in addition to the 2.5inch high flow cat and downpipe). The ECU is the MSPNP (with all the bells and whistles and 550 RC eng injectors).
The guy tuning the car had gotten >230rwhp on similar setups, he was surprised I was limited to 205rwhp (Shawn Church in Southern California, who seems pretty well known). Do you have a feel for what top end rwhp I should expect? (91 Octane)

I'll dig a bit on the front end.

Thanks again.

I have an "older" FM dual (bought 2 years ago), and it's quite loud. I bought what I thought was supposed to be a Vibrant resonator (turns out to be a cat), without much change in sound. If I had to re-do, I would go with Magnaflow, Enthuza-style.

Homemade 2.5" downpipe, 2.5" exhaust. Summit brand resonator and muffler. Ebay flex-section, homemade cut-out.

Total cost - i dunno maybe $150-$200?
