Default TWO wierd sounds from turbo....

I have some sounds that are coming from my turbo that I cant diagnose the source of. Maybe some of you guys have heard them before and fixed the problem.

Sound 1- Began after the instal of a JR high flow cat. Sounds like when you blow through a cardboard paper towel roll. Begins shortly after reaching boost and is louder then the spool of the turbine.

Sound 2- Begins when the turbo starts to spool but goes away when boosts hits at higher rpms. Arrived after the tightening of the wastegate actuator rod. sounds like a rattlesnakes tail. I have a feeling this one is the rod bouncing back between the side of the wastegate and the pin.

Any idea's? I would like to figure it out before NE dyno day on sat although I dont feel any deliverance in performance, its anoying and sounds broken.
Thanks,
7

My guesses

#1 I don't understand what you mean, I can't recall ever blowing into a cardboard tube

#2 downpipe rattling against tranny or WG actuator rod end rattling between WG lever and cotter pin. I had both problems. The first I fixed when I put the tranny back in after the clutch. The second I removed the cotter pin and replaced it with a bent finishing nail.

#2 Can also be fixed by just adding washers behind the arm so that it's right up against the pin.

Hmm, maybe it will help if I can get some sound clips. I'm going to give the washer thing a shot later and see if that takes care of #2

I heard what sounded like an exhaust rattle at one point. But that's all I heard.

It was doing it at the time. Remember what we thought was the wastegate rattling or something because of the bigger cat? I tightened it all the way and its still there. I might switch the cat out tomorrow with the stocker and see if the JR cat is bad. Maybe its has a leak but i dont see why it would make that noise. Other then that I'm stumped.

So i might have found the problem. The shaft in the turbo has a ever so slight of play in it. Is that normal or is it not supost to move. Can i fix it or does it need to be rebuilt? basically whats my next step?

Would the turbo make sounds like this if it was oil deprived? I dont have the oil return drilled so there might be a kink in it?

most turbos ARE supposed to have a tiny bit of play until the oil gets in the bearings, then its supposed to seal up from what I understand...

But I don't understand that much so IDK.

when you're turbo has enough play that the compressor blades hit the walls, it sounds like this: https://www.miataturbo.net/braineack...s/badspool.wmv

I really don't think it's the turbo per-say...

every needs to listen between 11 - 17secs., dont listen to the exhaust or the turbo spool...you'll hear a crazy rattling....then you can here it on the rest of the clips.

Tranny gears i dont think it is compressor blades on the wall. I had my nissan tranny **** up on me and it sounded kinda like that put in new synchros and it wass all better.

The shaft should have some play up, down, side-to-side (axial/radial) but not back and forth (lateral). The axial movement accounts for the space the oil film will take up, lateral movement just means **** (the thrust bearing) is worn out and the compressor wheel will eventually hit the inside of the housing, if it hasn't already.

Ok, I think I heard it. Sounds like a buzzing sound that is surging a bit. What's being used as a boost controller?

http://www.voodooboost.com/

Checked the oil return and feed and no kinks. Oil level is fine and i guess the play in the shaft is normal. Do you guys really think the noise could be from an exhaust leak?
