turbo intake?

Faeflora 10-14-2012 03:31 PM

Frankly, the car drives amazingly as is. The only thing I'd want is longer gears and a higher redline.

I will know in a couple of months!

Short runners, big plenum, etc.

18psi 10-14-2012 07:11 PM

putting a short runner mani on this car would be incredibly stupid

we're all drooling at his torque under curve and you're suggesting he reduce it? lol

Awesome numbers, congrats.

Fae said "stock crappy 1.8 head" is that a NA head? 99-00? 01+? I guess I need to go study your build thread, I want my car to be just like yours when it grows up.

Yeah it's a 99-00 head I picked up from a junkyard. The only thing I did to it was machine the head surface flat.

I have a VVT head in garage and while sure, I may not necessary pick anything up from just having VVT vs 99 head - the purpose with the VVT head is to build/port it for a higher revlimiter and better flow.

I want a nice intake but its the lowest priority item right now. Gotpsi IM is close to $1000 and I'd rather spend that money on tires

FTFY :giggle:

This would just get that much more crazy with VVT. If you had to guess and without becoming physically ill, how far into this build are you dollar wise?

m2cupcar 10-15-2012 12:32 PM

Is the boost rising to redline? Just wondering what's keeping torque up as typically the stock manifold was "blamed" for torque drop post peak with rpm rise.

18psi 10-15-2012 12:50 PM

I'm very interested in this too. But then usually its not just torque drop that others experience. Its power drop too. This thing does neither

bcrx7 10-15-2012 01:36 PM

So with the VVT, are people actually noticing HP difference? I just don't understand why the factory didn't use it on the Speed Miata (Mazda hasn't always been known for good decisions, so this might've been another case!) My 99 head is ported for my engine and so on, but just for future since the engine will be rebuilt once a year at least anyways.

18psi 10-15-2012 01:41 PM

VVT does nothing past 3 or 4k rpm iirc
Just lowend/spool

this. I probably wouldn't change a thing as far as the IM is concerned... Has great spool for the turbo size and holds very well to redline.

Alright, basically where I won't be on the track! I just like to simplify the car as much as possible!

EBC holds boost to redline - flat like Keira Knightley. Addressing the torque drop in high rpm was most important to me. Here's the things I've changed:
- obviously bigger compressor wheel with different compressor map
- VICS works and activates at 5000
- magic timing map made by Faeflora, with timing ramping up about 6* from 5.5k to redline
- sacrificed a goat??

My reasoning for using VVT in future is not "VVT is magical" but "if I'm going to spend $$$ on a head, might as well be a VVT head"

I think I'm at $20k for everything including the car, and there's a good chunk of money in suspension/brakes/tires - non-turbo stuff, basically.

have you tuned the timing latency?

I'm on a 36-1T trigger wheel, what latency?

Braineack 10-15-2012 02:59 PM

HAve you checked if the timing retards as the RPMs increase? should do it with the timing locked and using a timing light. This is part of the proceedure during initial setup.

Nope, haven't checked and already took off timing plastic plate thingy. Timing latency is only an issue if you're using a CAS for primary tach signal. Stretchy timing belt and all.
