Said "plinky" piezo sensor is a "tuned" sensor. If it's a GM sensor (likely), it is tuned to the wrong center frequency than where the miata knocks at.

Isn't the point of having the headphones so that YOU can be the filter and determine if you are actually knocking?

i realy like this discussion. for my purposes, i would prefer a plug of some sort between the mic and box to ease installation through the firewall.

I am pretty open to either a permanent or a clamp install.

I would rather have a regular mic than a sensor that is tuned for a particular frequency. This would surely make it easier for me to detect knock as opposed to just hearing noise intensity changes.

What ear buds would you recommend that are not ridiculously expensive?

Just to let everyone know, I started ordering components today.

The plan for right now is to get everything I need ordered by the end of the week, do a final test on the prototype(i.e. get actual recordings of knock, not just running engines) and figure out a permanent mounting solution over the weekend. Hopefully I can start producing them by the end of next week!

I think you should post an updated list of people interested.

It would definitely help you avoid ending up with too many parts in your hands.

Great job BTW

If there are more, try to let me know by Friday so I can make adjustments to my order. If you are on the list, and are no longer interested, let me know that too. With the fairly sizable initial interest, I'll definitely be making more of these, so don't worry if you miss out on this first batch.

Oh, and thanks for the continued support and input guys, depending on how this whole thing goes, I may be looking into developing other products in the near future at low price points.

I am very interested, but haven't heard a demonstration of the final configuration, unless that was it^^^.

I was just wondering about using an adapter and running the output into the AUX IN in my stereo instead of driving around with headphones on (illegal). I'm guessing it would work pretty well, and I could listen to it any time I wanted.

Go ahead and count me in. Thanks for your ingenuity and effort.

Final configuration recordings + actual knock will happen this weekend. I'm just trying to figure out how I want to go about inducing knock on my car. It makes me nervous to jack my timing up to like 20 degrees @ 8psi, but its for the greater good....

The sample recordings I've seen usually induced light knock pretty easily with small timing advance degree changes.

EDIT: Definitely still in...ready to PayPal...am an impatient bastard and definitely want in on first batch.
