Hi, I have the 3d printed intake in the carbon fiber layered wrap that I bought from a friend who bought it from Asmasm. I have all the silicone elbows, the carbon intermediate tube as well as the recommended K&N filter. My question is how on earth are you guys able to tighten the K&N filter to the 3d printed part. I can't for the life of me get a wrench or a screwdriver reliably in place to hold it all together. For reference I do have an ac condenser and full ac but still how are you all doing it? Did you work through the grill, remove the bell pan... What install method has worked the best?

 

Buy the smallest 1/4 socket wrench you can find. My K&N filter came with a worm clamp that has a 8mm fastener. It took some time at first, but I can now get that filter tight in less than 10 minutes of jamming my arm far up into the bumper hole.

 

It's a pain in the ***. I have done this probably 50 times through development. My preferred tool for it is a stubby ratchet with knurl that can be turned using your thumb:

 

My tool of choice was a small, flex-head 1/4" ratchet with a mid or deep 8mm socket, and then i clocked the clamp so it would be accessible when I reach through the grill or from up under the bumper.

 

Editing my original post, would this intake clear the hood on an NB, given that the radiator support would have to be drilled out to accommodate the filter placement?

 

Hey guys. I was wondering if somebody has tried the part with PLA (and maybe wrapping it in some sort of heat shield?). I know PLA is not recommended but it prints a lot better than ABS on my printer.

 

I don't see why it wouldn't if you used a hole saw to drill that hole in the same place as an NA.

 

It wont hold up. Is your printer enclosed?

 

It's not that expensive to have someone print it for you.

 

It's not enclosed, I might try to build an enclosure. Is something like PETG useable? It's more heat resistant than PLA, less than ABS though.

 

I haven't printed in PETG yet, but I'm led to believe its more difficult than ABS. Seriously, just wrap some cardboard around your printer or even set it in a box and it'll print fine. Make sure you have good bed adhesion as well, either glue stick or hairspray on glass(what's worked for me anyway). You'd be amazed how much even a lightly blowing ac vent on the other side of the room will screw up an unenclosed ABS print. You just need to keep ANY breeze off of it, and try to get the chamber temp up a little above ambient, although 50*C would be ideal.

 

Did anyone ever do A/B testing of this against the JoeFis intake? The reason I ask is because I just bought one...

 

I've had both and had better luck and results with the Joefis, but I don't have data points for you.

 

Well that is reassuring. I was definitely aware of the 3D printed intake when I ordered it, but wary of the 3D printing part of it. When I found out I could get the JoeFis, I jumped on it, nor realizing how much development this intake had been through!

Anyway, it'd be cool to see a back to back test done, if anyone has access to both

 

Does anyone know where I can score a small bit of carbon fiber tube? I want to match the rest of my intake but all I can find online is huge sections when all I need is less than a foot...

 

They look nearly identical. I doubt there is any difference on the dyno at all. I do know that with this intake vs stock there is a big butt feel difference.

 

Anyone come across any good printers lately? 3D Hubs is coming back with printing in Nylon 12, FDM printing and 100% infill for $206

 

Did Asmasm ever release the stl for the MAF connectors? I checked out the blog and his thingiverse page, but couldn't locate them. I might just be blind.

Hello guys, I am really fascinated by this project and would love to apply this to my MX-5. I have enough experience with 3D printing and am able to make the part at home, but my car experience is very limited. I have a stock 92 NA model and I am not sure what additional parts I need to purchase for this project. I have read something about aftermarket ECU and placing sensors, is this required or can I also do this install on a stock miata?
