Default CEL light (trans range sensor)

got a CEL on my 99 miata (i know...automatic....it sucks, but its gonna be a good chassis for a v8 swap when i have the money!) Anyhow, i have a code for a trans. range sensor. Doesn't drive any differently, but what exactly is the range sensor? Is it part of the shift select assy. If i disconnect the plug that goes into the shift selector assy, the code will go away for a day or 2, but always comes back. Any help? thanks
