I am trying to gauge pricing out new hyd lifters VS. having Ocean @ Chikara do a SUB conversion while he is doing my valves and guides/springs (in an already heavily ported engine). Cost is a big factor here, and while the SUB's are fairly inexpensive it's the shimming that costs $$ here.

Is there any way to check the health of hydraulic lifters? Worst case scenario I put these once I have in and if they tick, then buy new ones, right?

Sealed power ones are $28/ea, Rock Products are $13/ea and IIRC OEM are -+$40/ea?

This head will be seeing a 7800RPM redline. So that's right one ht outer limit of the hyd lifters, right?

One of the other costs to consider when going SUB, is cams. shimming up stock cams on a SUB setup is a pain and from what I've read dangerous for high rpm. So add another $600 for cams on top of the SUB conversion and all of a sudden it's $600 more than just buying new hyd lifters.

FML, what should I do?

Wow...that's a good price.

I was going to suggest the cleaning...but I spent about that much in time doing it (well, probably half that for what I get paid).

They are very easy to clean up...and makes a huge difference.

Well the thing is... the ones I have "may" be new. The head was built and supposed to have all new parts but Ocean took it apart yesterday and there were a lot of mistakes and re-used parts. So I don't know how old they are. How should I clean them up? Just brake clean or a parts washer?

I may try the ones I have and if they tick pick up the ones Joe listed.

Talk to Miata2fast about shimming them yourself. He's done it successfully several times and could walk you through the process and the pitfalls.

I've got 2 of 'em in my '92. Been there for a few years. No problems with 'em that I know of.

with SUB, even though it was designed for hydraulic lifters? And they don't list closed or open seat pressures which bothers me....

Hmm...It has zero size, yet nonzero mass. I don't think I'd want to install a singularity into my engine, what with the whole annihilating the entire world issue.

lol... Ya there is a bit of info missing. mainly spring seat pressure.

Dunno I'm reading the R&D thread for SUB and $200 for the buckets is not bad and then it's just shimming them. I've got all the time in the world now that I just got laid off from work...lol. And I like learning new things.
