Usually the two large o-rings leak, causing to loose oil pressure and lubrication of the VVT actuator. Try cleaning and using new Viton o-rings and assemble everything as it should be. (One large o-rings goes in the front of the VVT Actuator the other one is located in the other end towards the engine.)

Miata roaster sells a kit for ~$50 shipped, including new mazda crush washers, those two big o-rings, and many more. Worth every penny.

I took the cam gear off to get the head resurfaced as my headgasket blew. Im used to working on LS engines and i was in a bit of a hurry so i took the 4 big bolts off thinking i can get to the nut that way when I did the cam gear came apart i recovered all the peices or so I thought but I ended up missing two apex Springs to two of the seas I could have sworn two of them did not have apex Springs as when the cam gear came apart nothing flew out I caught everything and was taking mental notes since I was in recovery mode at this point and I did notice at the time I thought to my self dam this thing is going to be a pain to rebuild because some have those little arc Springs and some dont so how will I know which one so after getting it back together I looked at this fourum and several others come to find out all the apex seal should have a corresponding spring so that means I must have lost two the area I took it apart on was a clean and I did some searching to find nothing does anyone know where I can get those arc shaped Springs or is it possible to make them thank you!
