need help figuring out if car has LSD
okay, i have been having trouble trying to figure out if the miata i am looking at has a factory LSD. the main reason i am having trouble is cause of something my friend told me(which was that its rare for a black interior car to have a lsd or something like that can't member exactly). anyways the car is a 96 black miata with black cloth(or whatever the hell it is for interior). it has the power options like steering, windows, mirrors, and cruise. i don't know if it had power locks or not, i am not familiar with these cars, so i had no clue where it is at if it did have one.

i have been on miata.net before and looked at them the one for NA car's is hard for me to decipher and then the other one makes it sound like it would but not 110%sure i am reading the other one right. so i figured i would ask just to be safe. since i do not have the money to put a LSD in it.

Miata interiors are either Black or Tan, so i mean...
in '96 the torsen came on the: Popular Equipment Pack, Leather Package, 'R' package, and 'M' edition.

Um....what?

The top part of the page talks about the LSD in the 1.6L cars, which you dont need to read because you have 96. The bottom part talks about identifying a torsen.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
(Q)How do you identify Torsen's without dissasembly?
(A)The Torsen won't always turn both wheels when you turn the driveshaft, sometime if they are cold they will. One way is to take out the fill plug to see the Torsen gears which is hard to do because of the angle. Another way is to attempt to turn both half shafts in the same direction at the same time (tranny in neutral), can't be done with a Torsen. The foolproof way is to pull the stub axle on the type 1 or the drive axle on the type two. If you don't see a bar and can see directly thru the diff. it is a Torsen. If there is a bar, (spider gears) it's an open.
No bar=Torsen Bar = open or RX-7 clutch type
MazMart has noticed that the type 2 Torsen diffs were put into production during 3/1995. They are usually charactorized by the use of the single half shaft that goes directly into the diff housing instead of the prior stub shaft and flange mounting assembly.
(Q)Will a Torsen LSD fit in an open differential equipped 1994+ rear?
(A)Yes, the Torsen drops right in place of the open diff. No additional parts are needed unless you want to replace the halfshaft seals (always a good idea). The bearing are the same (last I checked the Torsen actually came with the bearings already installed). It is also unlikely that they will need a crush collar since they should be able realign the ring and pinion to it's original set with just the bearing backlash .
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Or you can just be smart, and call Mazda USA with the VIN and ask them.

wtf? just go to an empty parking lot and throw (or try to) a donut(s) in it.
if it does it, it has lsd. if it just spins one tire and sits there it doesn't.
also wondering why you say you don't know if it "had" power locks. why wouldn't it still have them if it did? are your doors missing or is it a salvaged car?
otherwise, like sparetire said, pull axles, see right thru (no bar) is what your looking for.

You really need to learn to search better.
Basically, if the 96 has power mirrors then it has a torsen in it. Unless it's an automatic. The car you described is a PEP package.
