I hope you know that there you are talking to is Tom, Trey. He's the one who killed it at Hallet...

My NA is a super budget clone of the 95R. Only with a horrible coilover set up and non VVT. I hope to have this car in the same condition eventually. Having two miatas makes everything even more difficult than it was when i only had one. Because, i now want them both to be cool.

SIDENOTE: Apparently both Tom and E described you as being my Texan Doppleganger. I hope to eventually get one of those ***** magnets from you.

January 2013 we buy a good JDM NB2 engine off an ebay seller in Canada and drop it in as is. Adaptronic comes out. MS3pro going in. Haven't dynoed it yet but I suspect it will be around the same 147whp or so.

Any chance you've had the car on the dyno (or Trackmaster or Pbox or other DAQ)? I'm just curious if you still feel pretty confident that the power output is ballpark comparable. The idea of replicating this kind of setup with a good JDM NB2 engine is definitely growing on me.

I'd like a little better weight-to-power ratio on the straights (and street) but I know my driving skill is not ready to come close to taking advantage of even a 200 WHP turbo setup, let alone the ~225 - 250 a TSE or AbsurdFlow setup would be capable of.

I'm thinking a 95R SuperMiata style setup would be a great stepping stone and there's no reason you couldn't eventually hang an EFR off an NB2 engine, right?

Compression ratio of a JDM NB2 engine would NOT be EFR friendly.

Seems reasonable, that's with a squaretop correct? I managed 135WHP with my NB1 engine without a squaretop.

I made 145whp on my OEM VVT engine with a square-top but it has a brand-new head and we're talking about 2-5 HP variance so it could be weather tiny correction differences.

I've heard some people speak of small increases in output from the ATI dampers, is there any truth to that? Could the Supermiata damper given me a little more output?

NECRO POST!!!!!

But, since this thread is the inspiration for my current build (https://www.miataturbo.net/build-thr...eet-red-76869/) and I've already been spending coin . . . why not?

The car currently has a roll bar like the 95R and the 949 rental. But everyone at the track is telling me to cage it. I don't plan to street drive it -- but I'm also not planning any W2W. I'm just curious, did you consider adding a cage to this car or to the rental?

It would indeed be safer with a full 6 pt cage. I made the decision to keep it more like the average customer will, as a daily driveable car. That's to prove a point. You can daily a reliable and fun track Miata that will be quick enough to have fun without much building expertise.

When you stand back and think about it, there is no magic cutoff point in lap time where you are suddenly less safe with just a 4pt. Just leaving the hot pit is the biggest risk. After that is driver skill and car prep. Lastly, it's the level of safety equipment. Everyone has to decide for themselves what level of risk they are comfortable putting themselves and their passengers under. I always wear an HNRS in the 95R on track.

Good points. Cage it is. Just makes sense for something that's always on track.

I'll call you tomorrow. Need some Xidas.

Excuse me, I didn't kill 95R at Hallet lol. I had one small John Deere adventure but it died slowly in the hands of Sonny due to an engine failure. I don't blame Sonny though, I think a few people test drove it that day and it was a suspected over-rev. I never took her out without a co-driver, so my hands are clean of that murder

LOL. Guilty conscience.

FYI, when I read "killed it," I thought it was referring to a great lap time. Now I know better.

I killed a small patch of grass, that's for sure. 949Racing edition John Deere.

The 95R had Supertech single valve springs. Fine for occasional trips to 8000, not fine for trips to 8800 it turns out.

We now put light doubles in every track car.

Why not just set the rev limiter to whatever safe rpm and be done with it?

This video isn't me. A lot of people drive the 95R.

Downshifting too fast (money shift-lite)

You know . . . while I'm changing out the intake cam . . . .

Member of the 949 power club in good standing. Might be a good time to do those valve springs. Hmmmmm . . . .

Oh, and I went back to the OEM shifter on the Red Car's 5-speed specifically to avoid money shifts.

Out of absolute curiosity, what shifter was in there before?

It was a Mazdaspeed short shifter. It was basically the same overall length as the OEM (so it didn't move the shifter closer to the wheel or anything) but it moved the fulcrum up. End result was that effort increased, distances between the gates got minimized and, because of the increased effort, you really didn't shift any faster (which isn't much of a limitation on a 5-speed anyway). Felt like a money-shift setup to me -- and, since Mazdaspeed sells crate engines, that makes sense. LOL.

The discussion on the long/angled Roadstersport shifter in the other thread has me intrigued though. But, honestly, I've never been unhappy on track with the OEM 5-speed shifter.
