What about taking the tach out competely and using the FM F1 style tach lights? Flyin' Miata : Interior : Gauges : Shift-I LED tach What do you think? If I took that out and got a 2 1/16 speedo, then I would have lots of room.

I'm a fan of a BIG tach, and a digital speedo is hard enough for me to keep an eye on. I hated digital speedos on bike, but atleast they all have big 6-12 tachs to keep the motor in the right spot.
I would get rid of the speedo first. You might even be able to find a way to do a heads-up digital display for the speedo. I had one on the 240SX that was pretty cool, and I'm sure the window reflectors have to be cheaper now. Then you get it ALL. Visible speedo, large tach, room for important auxilary gauges.

I am dumping the stock cluster and going to a Rumblestrip Racing dash. Tach, speedo, rev lights, and a lap timer. Above that will go boost, wideband, oil temp, and water temp. Fuel pressure, oil pressure, and fuel level will go off to the side. There will also be 3 warning lights on the dash: one for oil temp at 270F, one for water temp at 230F, and one for oil pressure at 20psi.
