Default Why do my speedo cables puke gear oil?

I put a new cable in my daily and just like the last one and the track car, they puke gear oil out the fittings at the cluster, all over my pants. This one lasted like two months, now it bounces. WTF?

Did you seal the speedo gear box? There's an oring or something.

Yep. O-ring on the tranny end. Common leak point.

Hey, at least your cable is well-lubricated!

BTW, apparently your transmission is also building pressure. There's a vent on the passenger side near the top. Better make sure it's clear.

Vents are cleared when installed and gear oil is clear like Pepsi Clear Gravy.

Yeah, and it's leaking on the cable and climbing up the cable like a little cork screw.

Is this not odd that it would get all the way up to the cluster?

First I've heard of such a thing, but then it is Hustler.

I had an internal leak on one not in a miata but in a civic. It did almost the exact same thing. First I drilled a small hole very carefully in the cable housing about halfway up the fire wall to let all the oil drain before it ever got to the gauge it helped a little I ended up replacing the speedo drive unit on the trans from another one I got used and it went away. I had replaced all the o-rings I could find and it seemed that something internal to the drive unit has a seal on it that went bad. Still going strong to this day that was about 4 years ago.

Bummer, replacing that seal was the only useful bit of info Google could provide.

Seals don't last forever, especially once compromised. There is both a seal and O-ring in that location. Easy to replace with tranny in the car. Less than $10 for both. I'd at least start by refreshing those.

They are like 4 months old in both cars, but I probably screwed it up.

I would have said trans vent, but you said you checked that.

I haven't checked-it since installing but there were all clean at installation time.

There is also a seal inside the sender thingamajig also I would bet. The round seal is really only to seal the female part of the cable to the male part of the sender so that fluid doesnt leak out of the trans that way. If its traveling up the cable then the sender seal (internaly) is compromised or (I would have to look at it) but the cable might also have a seal in it?

I could be crazy though.

This doesn't help The Hustler much, but I just want to thank him for exposing all of the car's weaknesses for us. Have the engine and tranny pulled right now and, since it's so accessible, I'm refreshing the speedo cable O-ring and oil seal and checking the vent. Makes me sleep better at night.
