Default Auto diff carrier different from Manual?

I'm trying to do a 1.8 diff swap into my 92. I just can't get the front diff / ppf bolt to thread in. (the one with the shank)

I think it is because I'm using an auto diff. The sleeve for the front bolt in the diff is slightly longer than the sleeve in my spare manual diff. The sleeve in the manual diff has a air gap between the bottom of the sleeve hole.

This picture shows what i'm talking about. I'm thinking I can hopefully tap the sleeve in the auto out a little so it will be the same as the manual. Ideas?

so long as it lines up and holds tight i don't see why it would matter

could always swap the internals into the old carrier....plus it has that rubber dampener thing.

A little a drilling and hammering and it was ok. The sleeve on the auto actually had been smashed a little on the end and the bolt couldn't go through. the swap is finished, but it took about 7hours.

I'm using an auto diff. carrier...I don't remember having that much trouble with the longer bolt sleeve. The other difference, of course, is the lack of rubber damper ring around the pinion flange.
