I've had the motor out this past week for attempt number 3 at fixing my oil leak. Resealed the pan and oil pump this time. I got the motor back in and hooked up this evening. It fired right up!

One problem though... The clutch works opposite the way you'd expect a clutch to work. The clutch acts like it's disengaged when you have the pedal out. When you push the pedal in, the clutch engages. Needless to say I haven't actually driven it like this for fear of damaging something.

I just can't imagine how this is possible. It looks like I'll be dropping the transmission this week for a re-mating procedure.

Did you install the disc backwards? I can't even fathom how that would happen.

 

I distinctly remember making sure the disc was pointing the right way. I had quite a bit of trouble getting the engine and tranny to mate. There never was a reassuring "Clunk".

 

I know a "Mechanic" who did this twice on a civic. Twice on the same car. And no it was not me, I don't claim to be any sort of mechanic/auto tech

 

Well, I pulled the tranny on Saturday. The clutch disc was in correctly. Anyone who puts a miata clutch in backwards must be completely retarded. The center section of the disc would be pushing against the flywheel bolts.

Put it all back together and the clutch works great now!

Reason for this awkward clutch situation?

I still have no clue.

Possible explanations...

Throw-out bearing failed to seat properly.
Clutch adjusted with WAY too much preload?


Oh and by the way, it still leaks oil!

im having the same leak problem im ganna just end up pulling the engine and tranny and cleaning every thing up as far as what hapend to your tranny im ganna say that the throw out bearing didnt seat right
