Hey guys,

I was disconnecting all the electronics in the engine bay required to pull the engine. I have the whole upper engine harness disconnected and most of the stuff under the IM.

I turned the ignition on to push the car back into the garage with steering. I noticed my fuel pump would not shut off when the key out and I was able to use the HVAC still. Is this normal? I don't know why I put the key in the run position.

 

why wasn't disconnecting the battery the first step?

 

Im surprised the + battery on the starter or alt didnt short out on something.

 

Because I'm a n00b. I was only separating connectors anyway. So, back to the original question.

 

Unless you unplug the three connectors at the pcm, your pump and accessories will still be powered even if you've unplugged most of the **** under the hood.

Disconnect your battery.

No, and good. Disconnecting the battery should always be the first step, one that should be common sense also... you wouldn't try to disassemble the engine with it running would you? So why would you work on anything electronic that is still getting power?

 

Yes yes moms I took your advice and disconnected the battery. I simply forgot - very extreme analogy. Last I checked there is no power going to things like TPS, EGR, VVT while the car is off...I have not removed the main leads to the starter yet. This is more like working on a light fixture with the breaker on and switch off

Don't forget to disconnect the electrical connections on the top of the transmission. The harness is bolted (10mm) on the bell-housing. I almost ripped mine out.

If the transmission is coming out too, don't forget to drain it.

This is probably the easiest EFI engine to pull... don't sweat it.

your pump was running still because....

the AFM has a kill switch for the fuel pump built in to it so if the circit is open from it being disconnected the pump will not shut off. yes it dose not make sense but look at the wiring diagram that switch runs to a relay that is supposed to kill the pump.



but you should disconect the battery befoer you start working on removing the engine..
