Garrett Turbos...The end of a quality product
#61
Bosch Mahle, Borg Warner, Mitsubishi, Peirburg, Komatsu & Holset are all possible companies to step up for the aftermarket consumer turbo market. I'm sure there are many others too. Seems to be Germany or Japan for quality options. They just haven't marketed to the aftermarket the way Garrett has. Lets hope one of them steps up if Garrett really is losing quality and innovation.

i guess you guys wouldn't have any interest or friends involved with honda's or drag racing in general to know this, but for the last 2 years, everyone with pro-am or big hp hondas, supras, stangs, monster fd's, pretty much anything, have been switching from gt35,40,42r garrett turbos, to borg warner s352's or something like that. they have been getting better or equal spool, and more hp for less money to boot! personally, when my gt28 dies, i'm going chinacharger without regrets. my galant has had a china charger since 2004, and our shop crx has had one since 2005. and for $175, they can't be beat.

No budget. I've just searched the net and sent a few emails to some Florida dealers.
Nope. Got a link? What is a HY?

Both have factories in China but maintain facilities around the world. BorgWarner on that page is stated to have 60 locations in 18 countries. Holset has manufacturing in Brazil, China, India, the Netherlands, UK & USA. It isn't where it's built as much as the quality of the design, consistency of production tolerances and failure rates. As much as I'd prefer USA manufacturing but if the best turbo available came from Mars I'd buy it if the price were competetive.
If Garrett is truly having quality and failure issues I hope another company steps up to fill the gap for the aftermarket. Many of the alternative companies don't produce turbo's small enough for our cars. It will then take a change from suppliers like BEGI and FM to make mani's and DP's to fit the alternative turbo units.

I say this is all bullshit. There are no garret turbi failures that I've read about here or elsewhere. **** the original original poster becaus ehe is yet another big dumb troll plus. As someone else already said up above. China is the big owener of it all so it doesn't mean **** to buy a pt or bw etc. My last final big wondrment on the subject is I wonder what trubies the enduro pro racers use and how well they hold up. It prolly dodnt maayer though becayse they must all get theyrier (got em all!) Turbiyes all custom made with top real merican peruvian hands.
One thing I would think is great to come out of chinih is a real gneuine long style exhaust manifold like the one jayL rocks. That **** is the megabeast.
I am sorry for being reactive, I will not boycott garret becus of that post plus I was bullshintin becus I'm too lazy nyways :/ n so r most of the turboers sof u

I'm just wondering what you run for internals on your motor. The price of a China charger is great, and they are almost completely comparable to the real thing, seen some not flow quite as well, but still damn good, but if the failure of one of the cheap $150 turbos takes out my $1500+ engine, its a big game changer, and it would be a chance I am personally not willing to take. There is a good chance that an intercooler would save the engine from some of the onslaught, but still, if you don't catch it quick or its a slow failure, there's a good chance your engine will be SOLd

Might try here for a Holset. I think they carry them. If not I bet they can give you some leads. They do our turbo work on the tractor.

I do recall Corky stating over at m.net that even if the wheel were to "explode" it would be mere aluminum confetti going through the motor. But even that maybe wishful thinking. How many of you guys have had throttle plates and screws break and getting sucking through the engine. I know that happened to my friend's 1.6 miata, and the only damage was to the exhaust turbine wheel. It chipped it up pretty good.
As for turbo failures, i have had one where the turbine grinded itself to the back side of the chra, and a friend of mine had his oil seals not seal up properly. That was taken care of via the manufacturer warranty. I have yet to see one fail that catasrophically, and when(not if) it does happen, I'll tear open the engine to see what the damage is. I have my fingers crossed right now.
I agree with you on using quality parts for a built engine, I know I would do the same. But as stated above, stock rebuilds are relatively inexpensive and so are BP's around my area. $150-200 for a junkyard motor in unknown condition. So the odds are even for me at that point.
