It seriously is one of the easier things to do on a Miata. Just use some "deductive reasoning" to figure out how to get to the two bolts. I'm assuming you have both an open-end wrench set and a set of sockets.

Changing the slave cylinder- So easy even someone on ClubRoadster can do it.

With regard to bleeding it once you've swapped it out, I'll say this -- when I did mine, I let it gravity-bleed while I drank a beer. Pedal felt pretty good. Then I thought, well, no point in half-assing it and I got my wife out there to pump the pedal while I did the valve open/valve close/refill routine. When we were done, pedal felt not as good.

Next time, I'll just let it gravity bleed and if it feels good, I'm calling it done.

Does gravity bleed actually work? Does it also work on brakes?

No idea on brakes, but it worked well on my clutch hydraulics. Fill the reservoir, pump the pedal till you get good pressure, leave valve dripping for 30-45 minutes and make sure the reservoir stays topped off.

Now, if you've got a stubborn air bubble in the coiled loop, it probably won't work, but if you've got a straight shot braided line I bet it'd work fine.

As always, YMMV with this stuff. Some guys can't seem to get it without a pressure bleeder.

FWIW, gravity bleeding is the only method that works for me on brakes. Everything else leaves the pedal with a mushy feel. Not sure why.

I've heard really mixed reviews on gravity bleeding, it worked for me and the car we fine for like 4 months though. I'd also like to point out that I have stubby arms which does not help in any of this. :<

The upper bolt.


The lower bolt.


Both pics were with the car on the ground and the steering wheel turned all the way to the right. Just make sure you unbolt the curly-q before you remove the 2 bolts holding on the slave.

Got the old slave out, getting ready to put the new one in.

One question, when I went to buy the slave cylinder the guy at autozone asked me for the las 7 digits VIN b/c he said there are tow different slave cylinders for '97 cars, however since I was under the impression that all '90-'05 cars had the save slave cylinder, and he only had the one type in anyway I just bought what was available. Now that I have the old one out, it does not looks the same as the new one. Any thoughts?

The difference being the rubber sleeves are different, and the end of the slave cylinders are different from one another.
