I've never heard of the driveshaft braking. I'm honestly not surprised about the rear breaking though. Putting that much shock load on small parts will tear them up.

You have to remember that when mazda made the miata it was never intended for drag racing. The reason v8 diffs are so beefy and strong is because drag racing is what people have been doing in those cars for decades. Not to say that you shouldn't drag your miata, thats not what I'm saying at all. But parts are gonna break from shock loading in drag.

i lost my pinion and ring last spring.

have oem replacements shot peened.

talking with the shop owner who rebuilt my diff, he says it's not so much that the miata differentials are weak, but it's the driveshaft. if the driveshaft has worn, stiff u joints, it causes vibration that rips the gears apart.

yah, i had the driveshaft rebuilt.

My friend sheared his driveshaft in his stock M3 running on slicks earlier this season. Split it into two seperate pieces. That suprised me more than the torsen failing actually haha.

Tore it apart earlier this week, looks like one of the gears on the torsen cracked in half under stress, and then two or three other gears split cleanly in half as well. the first gear got mangled but the other gears are a CLEAN split straight down the center, kinda unbelievable. Nothing is salvagable..

Looks like it's time for a aftermarket LSD.

No gears in a viscous (aside from the ring and pinion of course), just plates inside the actual differential unit, with jelly like fluid inside.. IIRC

I havent found an aftermarket LSD that appeals to me yet doesnt cost an assload. I think I *should* be good if I cryo the gear set on the next torsen, and properly put it to specs.
