96 with 00 engine stuttering at 2200 rpm

96 with 00 engine stuttering at 2200 rpm

car is a 96 miata with a 00 engine in it (and 6 speed tranny). in neutral if i lightly press the throttle, it will hit 2200 rpm and keep bouncing between that and 2000 rpm, if i press on the throttle a bit harder it bounces faster. if i press past 50% it will rev like nothing is wrong all the way to the red line and does make good power.
in first gear if i press lightly on the gas it will hit 2000 rpm and lose power for a half second and then surge forward hard to the red line, usually getting my tires to slip for a second. less prominent in 2nd gear, and almost non-existent in 3rd gear and above. if i press the throttle harder it revs and doesn't have an issue.
Also has the issue of in higher gears of maintaining speed. if i press on the throttle below 25% it won't seem to maintain speed at all, but i can press a little harder and it will accelerate smoothly. so i can't maintain speed (only accelerate) until i hit about 60mph, then i can just fine.
i'm pretty sure this is a air to fuel metering issue, but don't know what to check or how to fix it. car has new plugs and wires, no vacuum leeks that i can find, with every vacuum hose replaced. electrical system is from the 96, injectors from 00, with the m-tuned duel feed fuel rail. also has a 1.6l clutch and flywheel (fidanza).
any ideas?

Yeah, probably needs to be adjusted. Is the 99 TB/TPS being used? I wonder if the 94-97 TB is the same as 99+? If you can't figure specs on how to adjust it, search around miata.net in the garage section, and also on the forum there. I'm sure it's covered somewhere, if not here.

I'm using the 94-97 TB and TPS. i've got the factory service manual along with the enthusiast manual, i'll head out and give a shot to adjusting it, might not be able to do it until tomorrow morning though.

my TPS sensor wasn't properly adjusted. adjusting it fixed the issue completely. the problem is that while i adjust that, i noticed the CPS wasn't properly gapped, so while doing that i snapped the bolt that holds it on in half..........so now i have to remove the sway bar and radiator to get enough clearance to use a drill with a screw extractor............fun
