That's really not good. I'd start by verifying both cams are intact and moving.
The drag car I help out with made a pass, ran fine on the return road, then would not start. It went from eh eh eh eh vroom to eh eh eh whirr. Result? 8 bent exhaust valves.

Woes revealed:
FUUUUUUUUUCKKKK. OK.
So I dicked around with the car some more, drained the battery a few time, charged it a few times, fucked around with the wiring, fixed nothing, just got my compression tester extension stuck down my spark plug hole.
Sean AKA 2JZ Miata came by to take a look at it. He got my compression tester unstuck with a screwdriver and then we pulled the valve cover.
This is what he found:
That is a sheared off bolt that mounts the timing marking plate to the head.
And found all this crap
And this poor washer but no traces of the bolt head. Except:
For this hole in my brand new gates belt.
Which probably caused this: (couple shots for clarity)

No that is the notch of the E mark in the timing gear but it does look like a chip. I have a question on this for anyone with experience with VVT. We took the cover off and you can see where the cam gears are in the pictures but this car has an ATI damper on it and on this 1.8L there is a little tit that sticks out of the lower cover above the crank pulley witch appears to be a timing indicator but it is located about 2 inches to the left (looking at front of engine) of the timing marks you would use to check with a timing light. Is there something weird like you use one mark for mechanical base time and another for electronic w/light timing or what. If the crank is supposed to line up with the tit I think the motor will be fine but if it is supposed to be lined up on the regular timing marks like my 1.6 motor did then the crank is out like 6 or 7 teeth and the one cam is out 3 and it is amazing it has compression at all.
faeflora - one your car is sweet I wish it would run. lol Do you have a pic of where the balancer lined up with the little thing on the timing cover so this will stop bothering me so bad.

the stick that hang out out on the left hand side of the crank (looking form the top) is the tensioner mark.
you're talking about this right:
just to the left of the line marking the lower timing belt cover?

Not to sound like an idiot again but what the hell it the tensioner mark for and also to add to earlier post the timing is worse than it looks in the pic because it means the crank jumped like 6 teeth. holy ****. I do belive we are talking about the same "stick that hang out".

once you align the belt, you're supposed to turn it 2 rotations and line that mark up wit the left timing mark, then apply the tensioner.

Yes on the service manual just for my personal knowledge but that makes sense. That is something I always do out of habit to check never knew they actually put a mark there for that works for me. Thank you Braineack.

Ok now that there is a pic the cam gears and crank picture are without moving anything so if I am reading the marks corectly with the exhaust cam lined up the crank is way out and the intake cam is out about 3 teeth.
