I don't think any OEM ecu is ever as "basic" as MS. But they have some seriously cool stuff like properly calibrated and very effective knock sensors and fuel/spark control strategies...

....and the biggest thing that MS will likely never even come close to: OEM calibrated idle control, start up control, ac idle up, etc.

All the things that are a nightmare to nail down flawlessly in MS. at least IMO

So basically it's 50/50

Even if we dont get a good tuning solution on a DI ecu its not the complete end of the world. There's a few stand alone solutions now either using toyota or mazda OEM DI driver boxes (or bosch aftermarket) that you can use with any normal standalone. Most common I've seen is the toyota box and haltec.

Thanks for making me look into this further. I'm really glad I did! My build spec sheet (what we use to place the orders for the cars) shows that the LSD and Bilsteins are standard on the manual-trans Club model, just like the NC. REALLY happy to see that.

That makes me like it.

A friend of mine who is a designer for Ford (was responsible for most of the exterior design of the 2011 Explorer redesign) HATES that line. Dunno why. I likes it.

Still, I'm slightly puzzled by the fact that people are debating over such minutae in MSRP. Discussing the difference between $29.4k and $32.8k leads me to believe that certain people here are actually contemplating purchasing this car brand new, from a dealer.
I AM the dealer, so yes it concerns me greatly as I get to hear the complaints and try to fulfill the requests of customers.

But even so... I'll be considering leasing one

Why is the mx5 so small?

hornetball 06-09-2015 02:40 PM

OMG!! Seriously?

Wife wants me to sell her SL and get her a Miata. This guy needs to buy it. It carries lots of golf bags and is boring as hell to drive (but you do look kind of cool).

It's hard for me to imagine two more different passenger vehicles, so presupposing that your friend liked the job he did on the Explorer, I can't say that I'm really surprised.

just makes the rear look Bulbasaur.

turbofan 06-09-2015 03:12 PM

Ha... he was responsible for everything but the front. Or the rear. i can't remember which... Miata fanatic, also has an e-type Jag. But anyway, some like it, some don't. I just see it as a way to liven up the styling a little.

I keep checking that section daily just for some laughs.

I think I yelled at that dude because he had a super meltdown when the ND bodywork was revealed back in September. He had a half page screed written out about how Mazda completely fucked up and has completely lost the mark and whatnot. I'm not sure if he offered it or it was asked, but he alluded that he was a designer for Ford and said that he did the majority of the bodywork on the Explorer.

I think I probably said something snide about him really having an eye for design if he was responsible for the Explorer. I'll see if I reposted it here or on SA, it was quite hilarious.

e: found it:

I am angry. Really angry.

I hold my tongue about most designs because I am not the target market, but this car, I AM THE TARGET MARKET.

The worst part is knowing that every time I see one of these things I will see a great opportunity lost. Gone. Over.

The car has wonderful overall proportions, and that's what makes the designer's crime all the more vile. Sick. Awful.

They destroyed it for no other reason than to stroking their own egos. In the end they'll know they failed. The car isn't great, and it could have been. It'll go down as just a footnote to the NA.

This small, tight, pure little machine should not be infected, festooned or decorated with the trite, weakass nonsense crap of some clueless egotistical designer or design boss.

One of the forum members once asked why all cars can't be beautiful.

Well here's the reason. HUMAN NATURE.

They can't help getting their egos involved. They want to put their fingerprints on it, "sign it", graffiti-ize it. Oh and they did. I can think of a few other phrases and words that describe what they did but are not fit for this forum.

A beautiful design requires restraint, maturity and discipline on the part of the designer. An Aston V8 Vantage, a E46 M3, a Cord 810 all from the heart. All pure.

How quickly stupidity and ego can turn an E-type into a Daimler Dart.

The only reason I am not screaming "moron!" to the people that say they like the car is because I am giving them the benefit of the doubt. I think that what they are seeing are the great overall proportions and not the detail warts and tortured surfaces from the design team. I can't live with those. I will not buy one. EVER.

e2: VVV - they deleted a bunch of my posts because I was being a big ol' meanie. If you go to like page 18 of this thread, you can see me talking about it and everyone taking pot shots at mnet

Would LOVE to see that comment thread, be it on M.Net or here. LMK if you can find it. I would assume he's on M.net, I know he's not over here much.

You know what's funny?

I used to joke about how certain cars, principally domestic ones, looked as though as number of different designers had each been assigned a different part of the body, and then they were all mashed together at the end.

I never actually believed that this was, in fact, true.

I mean, I know that these cars tend to be "designed by committee," but I always assumed that, as it was back at Harris, the committee provided guidance and criticism to the designer, who was then tasked with modifying the design so as to please everyone. But we (Harris) never had more than one person actually doing the physical implementation of the cosmetic design for any one product.

If I were going to take the time to become righteously pissed about some random aspect of the ND, I'm certain that I would have focused on how it's been infected by the same "angry" front-end styling that's crept into the whole product line, and how this is a betrayal of the soft, cheerful look which defined the car during the first 15 years of its existence.

Putting a graceful curve into the ass-end wouldn't have ranked high on my list of war-crimes.

Yeah, pretty sure that's him, though I don't remember him having THAT many Miatas.

Anyhow, yeah I do think it was a pretty extreme overreaction.

Looking forward to getting our first one in stock in a month or so.

Chilicharger665 06-09-2015 06:06 PM

Ed, as soon as you mentioned your friend was the "Explorer guy" I instantly recalled how fucking insanely retarded he was in that thread. The guy who designs SUV's bitching about real cars...

turbofan 06-09-2015 07:22 PM

LOL... yeah. he's a genuine car guy, and loves Miatas (as you can tell by his collection) but he loves them more for being a modern-day Elan or MG than for being a lightweight performance sports car. He definitely likes the performance aspect but is clearly very opinionated.

:dunno:

Still funny :giggle:

hornetball 06-09-2015 07:27 PM

In 1990, the Miata needed to be a modern/better re-incarnation of lightweight British sports cars.

In 2016, the Miata can be itself. It's earned that right by being true to itself and its design goals for far longer than any of those British sports cars existed.

rleete 06-09-2015 07:46 PM

Well said, hornetball.

I saw an explorer today, and they look like ass. His opinion counts for less then nothing in my book.
