Default mk2 gearbox mk1 engine

Will a mk2 gearbox (1998) fit a mk1 engine (1994)? There is a really low mileage gearbox for sale very close to me with a 1/4 of the miles than mine has.

Cheers Paul

To elaborate, with almost no exceptions, all of the major mechanical assemblies are interchangeable as a unit between all cars from 1990-2005. Engines, diffs, transmissions, suspension, steering, etc.

The individual parts that make up these assemblies often don't interchange, but you can take, for instance, an entire coilover assembly from an 05 and stick it into a 90.

There will often be differences in electrical connections, but those are easily overcome if you have the pigtails from the donor car. I can't recall offhand if the neutral and reverse switches from the 5 speed NB have the same connectors as the NA, although I think they do. You will need to swap over the speedometer drive gear from your old transmission, as the NBs used an electronic pickup. This is an easy swap.

If I remember correctly, you will only be able to use 2 out of the 3 starter bolts.

That is only if you are going to a 6 speed.
