Default Need help with crankshaft position sensor please!

BLUF: how do i properly position the crankshaft position sensor on my 99?

Borrowed this tool from a friend to tighten down my crank bolt and it required removal of the crankshaft position sensor. what i found trying to button everything back up was that the sensor spins pretty freely around that single bolt and you could certainly put it close enough to interfere with the trigger wheel, and probably also far enough to not get a good reading.

searching turned up this:
Where is the crankshaft position sensor located on the 1999 Mazda miata

states that there should be a 0.5-1.5mm gap. is that legit? is that between the wheel itself, or the tooth that triggers a readout? i figure i could use a spark plug gapping tool and sandwich that between the trigger wheel and the sensor when torquing it down, and then use a timing light to verify its within the noted spec?

anyway on to the pics

here it is in place

here you can see it up close and the sensor tucked out of the way

how how do i make sure that gap is correct between the sensor and the pulley?

thanks!
