Lets see... ken hill's car so that was several years ago. probably back when Replika Maschinen was doing head work for them. Don @ Replika (all FM engine failure discussion aside) can do some pretty wild and amazing things with headwork.

I'd believe 26 ft-lbs.

I'm at least dropping my spare head off to a machinist today to check the surface for warpage. That way I can drop the hat on having them true it really fast for me and I can pick it up the next day. So I can spend the rest of my timing pulling the current head, which wont take very long. Just tired of repairing it, i wanna UPGRADE it.
check the block for squareness too. I usually like to use the narrow edge of a 24" metal ruler and slide feeler gauges underneath it in various places. If there is more than .006-.010 gap I'd consider having the block surfaced. I don't know what the factor spec is on block squareness, but both mine have been less than 0.010 and have not had any issues.

Well I think Ben might have been on to something....I got my tool to test the cooling system and pumped pressure through through the system, held the pressure and no sign of leakage. Threw my plugs back in (had performed that last compresison check), reconnected my coils, wires and injectors and fired it up so I could test the system at temperature. We'll the damn thing barely would idle, I'm talking 500RPM and like 10 ~hg. Nothing would explain it, got spark on all wires and everything was connected. So each day I fire the car it's gotten gradually worse. I didn't perform the hot test because I was afriad to idle it more. Then I got pissed and went home. So I'll poke around it more this weekend...but I'm guessing, maybe it is somthing electrical...I But if it was the headgasket (hard to tell cold) it would have reached a point where I pumped and it would flicker around in the red and not get higher, if the cooling system was leaking, I wouldn't have been able to reach 10-15psi.

problem being that electrical **** tends to work or not... it rarely degrades like you are describing.

**** you both. The ignitor is trashed. Let me say that again. YOUR IGNITOR IS FUCKED. Replacing the ignitor will clear your ignition problem. But you still *may* have another problem or two to also clear up.

You have like a hundred other 1.6 dudes near you. Have one of them come over, trade ignitors, and start the cars up.

heh, ben.

electrical insulation can break down and cause intermittent failures like that. it can be very heat and moisture intolerant. but when it's dry and cool work fine.

We chased down an intermittent power problem like this in the race car for months, replacing and rewiring everything on the car. Then by accident realized that the car would idle fantastic if we introduced a huge vacume leak in the intake manifold. It turned out to be the timing belt being off a tooth.

Default Now This Is A Hot Cat!

haha.

so i went out to try to cooling pressure test.

was able to ilde the car in a few configurations....no iac valve, no pcv line (big leak), both, etc.

so the cooling system check out, pressurized as should, would idle at 15psi and then hit 22psi once the fans turned on and back...no signs of a headgasket leak.

so then i threw my laptop on it to datalog startup and whatnot. Then the car went back to shitty idle...so i fiddled aroudn and really couldn't figure it out....then i started seeing smoke from UNDER the car....

hmmm, think I found the problem? could explain a lot.

fwiw, the rest of the exhaust looked fine...so i assume when the rings died all the coolant/oil that went into the cat and fucked/clogged it up.

well, if it is the problem...ill just take a pipe to the catalyst and call it a day.

gotta let it cool down, and will try to run it again open DP to see if there is a signifgant difference in idle quality...
