Poor man's exhaust cut-out
I've been wanting to do this for years and never in my imagination did I dream it could be executed so beautifully. It almost looks like the car was supposed to come that way.
Super sleeper hidden secret lever behindish the seat http://img440.imageshack.us/img440/4776/lever1yw7.jpg Cleaned up for that OEM look. http://img148.imageshack.us/img148/8070/lever2wb1.jpg Up in the air http://img501.imageshack.us/img501/7118/sidexs7.jpg Here's the rest of my exhaust BTW. http://img519.imageshack.us/img519/3079/cutout4pw9.jpg Feast your eyes upon the glory. http://img512.imageshack.us/img512/436/cutout3hq8.jpg http://img150.imageshack.us/img150/9243/cutout2jp4.jpg http://img262.imageshack.us/img262/8607/cutout1lc6.jpg you cant see if unless you're under the car...I think and it actually works perfect. Im still gonna clean up the welds and stuff and attach the throttle body on there a bit better but otherwise it's done. The muffler is super restrictive b/c I wanted it to sound close to stock. This'll help a lot. Other pics: I SO need to clean the garage. It's a sad sight http://img241.imageshack.us/img241/6008/garagenu5.jpg ugh, tire time http://img241.imageshack.us/img241/2592/tiresii2.jpg I need to refinish my wheels. I usually dont care so much about nice looking wheels but the powdercoating is pitted all to hell making them get dirty real fast and a serious pain to clean. So far I've done one wheel Before http://img501.imageshack.us/img501/5...lbeforexm0.jpg After http://img519.imageshack.us/img519/6...elafterrg8.jpg And heres the lexus. It's dirty. I'll get around to it. So far I've claybarred about 12sqft. http://img205.imageshack.us/img205/4782/img1354jo8.jpg |
are you able to reach that while driving? it looks like you would have to get out of the car to get to it...........GHETTO-TASTIC!
|
Me likes, that's awesome. We need video's!
|
A thottle body? That is priceless! SloS13 wins the Ghetto Fabulous award. :bigtu:
If that thing is open for any length of time, you might consider trying to fabricate some kind of downpipe for it. One of the guys in LA melted his bumper cover a few years ago doing something similar. |
your hood is broken.
|
What size Throttle body? What did it come off of? I keep thinking about doing something similar, but have it hooked to the gas pedal so it only open above 3/4 throttle or something. Same here, going for 100% sleeper OEM look, and sound.
|
wow that's resourcefulness. i would guess ideally you'd want to put it further up in the exhaust stream
|
weld a spare wastegate on it and run a boost source into it instead of the cable.

went for a ride just now and it works absolutely perfect. no leaks and it sounds great open. It's still going through the resonator so it's not crazy loud. Actually sounds really good. I'll try and get a vid soon. Oh yeah and I can reach it without a problem. It's just slightly awkward.
I considered putting a wastegate actuator on there but I decided I'd rather just have a manual one. It's some kind of Honda Civic throttle body. Either a D or B series. I removed the lip and it fit perfect in a 2.5" (with expanded end). Fit perfect. |
Cool. Turn up the amps on your welder, looks way too cold. I so wanna do this.

I've been too lazy to get my gas filled for the MIG. |
Meh, I've done plenty of flux core welding. It works. Just gotta get the heat right. I'm no great welder but when the power's too low, you have to use more gap to get the heat to concentrate.
So what's the specs on your exhaust? I'm assuming 2.5". What muffler? You gotta go make some videos. |
all homemade 2.5. Summit resonator and summit "turbo" muffler. Sounds real quiet. Only thing I can take videos with is my digicam :(

Here's something similar on a turbo SE-R.
http://www.sr20forum.com/turbo/18425...-out-done.html Attachment 213517 Attachment 213518 ATP had a neato exhaust cut out that worked off boost pressure to open it up and close it at no boost. Of course I wasn't willing to pay around $300 for this - and they are out of stock with no in-stock date known, I made my own. You need two things to make this work - first you will need some kind of precision made butterfly device in a housing. A throttle body off a 4.6 Ford Crown Vic was big enough (2 3/4) opening and cheap - $9.99. Second you need a turbo wastegate actuator. Brand new Dodge SRT take-off for $40 will work just fine. So, concept is simple - it will open up based on the wastegate you choose to use (SRT is 4 psi) and of course is closed with the same tension when driving normally. Add in a bit of creative fab/cut/weld and you my friend have a effective cutout which requires no electrical wiring, no cables and no reaching under the car to open and close. Yes, you will have to route boosted air there, but 1/4 soft copper line is cheap, easy to bend and very durable. Does it work? Damn skippy it works - and works freaking awesome! I hesitated to post this, as it has only been on the car for a couple days and I cannot prove its long term reliability. Just thought I would give those looking for a very stealth exhaust for normal driving and a wide-open in-your-face screaming no back pressure LOW DOUGH option. |
awesome, sign up on homemadeturbo.com and post that now!!!!!

unfortunately ATP hasnt had those VES valves in stock for at least 2 years... why they still advertise them on their site is beyond me.
another solution is a QTP electric cutout. if you get the controller with it you can trigger it open manually or with a button/switch. So you could have it trigger only when your WOT, etc. http://www.quicktimeperformance.com/QTEC/index.php |
