Startup checklist - Mazdaspeed sitting for a few years
As I posted in the n00b post here forum, I am working on rehabbing a Mazdaspeed with my FIL. It's been sitting a few years in Az, so there is a lot to be done. One of the things we need is a checklist of items before we plug in the new battery and turn the key. Here's what I have so far, if anyone has additions they are welcome!
Fuel system
Fuel system
- Check/replace fuel lines
- Replace fuel filter
- Drain/replace gas (He added a gas stabilizer long ago, but...
- Check and replace damaged wiring (Rats nested in the engine). So far not too much damage seen.
- Replace battery tray
- Replace battery
- Replace oil
- Replace filter
- Replace damaged lines
- Check fluid, replace if necessary
- Replace overflow tank
- Replace fluid
- Replace reservoir
- Resurface rotors
- Drain/refill/bleed brakes
- Replace timing belt/water pump
- Replace PS/AC belt
- Replace Water pump/Alternator belt
- Replace any damaged tubing
- Unplug spark plugs
- Spray fogging or Marvel mystery oil in each cylinder
- Turn over by hand
- Profit
That is a fairly comprehensive list and should cover most everything. I would add the engine oil just before startup. Even a new battery should be put on a charger for a few hours. A strong battery is paramount. I like to add a mix of marvel and gas. Maybe a tablespoon in each cylinder. This will help it start faster. You might add some fuel treatment. My preference is a bottle of B12 and Techron to 10gal as a shock treatment.
Only thing I'd add, is full the Fuel Pump fuse and crank for oil pressure before starting. I like the idea to fog the cylinders before starting, being in AZ you shouldn't have rust or moisture issues to deal with internally.
A couple added items:
Visual inspection in wiring loom, rodents like to chew on these things.
Clutch hydraulics, have a spare set in hand.
Master relay, these die often.
Would take a look at the tank and internal fuel sock.
Keep an eye on injector o rings and fuel pulse damper for leaks.
