Default Trouble setting the timing advance, 1.6 1993

Hello,

I have a 1.6 long nose 1993 Miata. I have recently installed a MS3PNP and I am trying to set the timing advance using a timing light. When using the light hooked up to spark plug 1, the mark is moving around the whole pulley. It never stops in one place, it walks around the entire circumference continuously.
  • In Tuner studio, timing is locked at 10
  • I tested the light on another Miata with the same plug wires, works fine
  • Even though it shouldn't do anything, I bridged 10&GND to make sure
  • Using the throttle makes it seem to spin faster
  • I've waited for the car to warm up
  • The cas is bolted down tight

One issue I have at the moment is that the idle is about 950, as I didn't want to mess with the screw as the idle was perfect before the standalone. Could this be affecting it?

When I set the engine to TDC, the pulley mark does line up properly with the TDC mark.
The only thing I can thing of is that the damper is going bad, however I would think the mark wouldn't line up with TDC anymore. I am going to try another used one tonight and see if anything changes.
If anyone else has any ideas I'd be grateful, this is driving me insane haha.
Thanks

Did you check the base timing with the oem ecu before installing the ms? Have you checked your keyway? Even though the 93 has a stronger crank nose and bolt the keyway can get wallowed if the crank bolt gets loose, I had this issue after dealer service. Another possibility is a loose timing belt, how many miles on it?

im assuming you followed tunerstuido instructions?

Thanks for the reply. I took off the pulley and found it was bad. The two halves can be moved separately without any effort, so I believe the damper failed.
