Dunno why you'd consider a MS3 or Evo when mulling an ST.

If you choose an MS3 over an ST you have issues.

I seriously doubt I can find an ST at auction since they have only been out what, a year? The auction has *mostly* off-lease cars...

I thought about a WRX but they go for wayy too high and they are impossible to find at auction. The car will have to be in the ~$15,000 range....

the ms3 will be the only thing in that price range.

the ST is a 30K car that's only been out 2 years or so now. WRXs can get close if you look find a higher mileage '08 or '09 or earlier, but you don't want the 08.

Yeah that's pretty much where I'm at.... ms3 is better than some BS cookie cutter car. But hell if I'm not the one paying for it I will drive a 2012 focus with a smile.. I really have to get the specifics when my boss comes back from vacation.

Yeah I bought a brand new 08' back in 08'... What a mistake! Loved the car but I was pissed as soon as I saw what the 09' was packing.

that's why you never buy the new model. They fixed a lot of the complaints of the 08 in 09. That's why I have an 09, and outside the body change in 11, 09-14 is all the same. So I went with the cheapest.

Other than the price, I saw no advantage of the ms3 over the wrx. and with the ST out, forget about it, beats it in every way.

but, like you said, I'd be happy with a Chevy Cruise if it was free.

Yep ... Free daily and I get to keep the miata and set it up properly with a 1.8 now. All will be right in the world! a ms3 (or comparable) to daily would only be an added bonus.

1st world problems eh?

When I was briefly considering selling the miata I test drove a new MS3 and GTI (the ST wasn't out yet). I was all for the MS3 until I drove it. It was just too much work to be a fun DD. Didn't like the clutch, shifter or the torque steer. If I didn't have to worry about maintenance I would actually choose the GTI over the MS3 for a DD. As said before, now with the ST out, it would be my top choice over those other two hands down.

For a split second, GTI crossed my mind when I first started thinking over options... I dont think I could even own a VW though. I guess for a company car it could be comfortable and if I hate it I just trade it in in a few years for an ST

1.8 Arrived! Its a little dirty and gunked up from sitting for a while but it spins freely... curious to see what the compression #'s will be.

Couple concerns though...

1.) Looks like it had some terrible blow-by (Stuck PCV valve?) - I will have to remove the intake manifold and put it in the parts washer for a while. Throttle body is gunked up just as bad...

2.) The plastic TB cover on the bottom (The one that has the timing marks on it) Is touching the crank pulley - I will have to rip off the crank pulley and try to re-align the plastic cover or replace it... Hopefully its just the cover and not something more serious

3.) CAS looks rusted and nasty - I believe I read somewhere I can use the 1.6 CAS, so I will probably swap mine over

Cas and lower timing belt cover should both swap over fine from your 1.6 to the new 1.8.

Is there any negative to using an impact gun to remove the crank pulley? I would properly torque it back on later but I'd like to pull it off quickly tomorrow morning.

Looks like a flood motor, You can tell by the Corrosion in the throttle body and starting in the intake manifold. Doesn't look like much water got past the throttle body so you might be okay. I picked up a flood car From hurricane sandy for my brother and the engine looked like that. On the plus side it started right up with fresh oil. All external bearings on the engine were shot though along with the CAS (corrosion galore inside)

What do you mean by external bearings? Like the pulley bearings?

No problem at all using an impact to pull off the crank pulley bolt.
